My advice is stay away from moto.
My analogy - Moto is like a cavalier - they throw everything in it to get you to by the car - once the warrenty is up SELL IT!
Samsung and Sony Ericsson are better. You pay for everything extra but it's going to last well past your contract if you take care of them.
It depends on how much you talk a month/ what you want the phone to do and how long you want the phone to last.
You don't by an echo/smart car if you drive over 4 hours a day. You'll get a camry for that.

sorry in advance FF...
#1 carrier of what? ****ed off customers? #1 carrier of customers that wonder where the ridiculous advertising budget comes from while they wait on hold for the next available operator?

I had a samnsung on my last carrier and took what i think was pretty good care with it, and during the last year of my contract I could only recieve one phone call that would last a minute before the battery died, and i'm a student so I can't afford to keep buying batteries. The thing that I really liked about the Rokr was the battery life which has according to roger's website has a life of just over 9 hours of talk time. So i'm staying away from samsung, I haven't really looked at the sony ericsson phones, would you have any model reccomendation?

really - samsung is great with the Rogers phones. Do not use a car charger if you can help it. They destroy batteries. I sold my rokr for a reason - there are better phones out there. It's not "crap" but it's not the best.
I'm in love with the 600w with Sony. It's a $$$ phone but DAMN! Switchblade, bluetooth, mp3, mega pix, edge class 10 and the build quailty is the best read about it on the website. www.sonyericsson.ca. also www.howardchui.com look up sony and the Samsung P207

Has anyone ever bought a phone from ouside of this zone and used it with local sim cards?
If so, do you have to buy a phone that is unlocked or is it easy to unlock it yourself?

No worries 4x, you just transpose your hatred of Telus on to Telus Mobility. TM has the best network, fewest dropped calls, and lowest churn of any company in North America. There are other business reasons behind it, but those mentioned pertain to client satisfaction, the greatest being the lowest churn rate. (How often people leave us.) While Rogers and Fido are way up there with over a 2% churn, Bell has about 1.5% churn, Telus has the lowest in NA at 1.2%. So while you have a hate on for Telus, (and subsequently TM,) those who hate the other companies hate them more.

Edited to add that as per our Data department who have to deal with the issues that these phones have, they all tell me that the LG 200 is the best phone we currently carry. While Motorola will give you decent reception, they are not a phone for gadgets and their gadgets tend to break or not work properly. At least, that's Telus' experience with them.

I find that really surprising considering how many people I know (including myself) who hate TM and can't wait for their contracts to expire and for the date to pass when you can keep your own number.

Absolutely. It's odd because people in the West seem to hate TM and people in the East hate Bell, though there are exceptions. I think a lot of people transpose hate for the landline version of either on to the cellular version to the point where they don't differentiate between the two.
Quite honestly though, I find this with every company, you'll end up dealing with *******s no matter who you go with. There are reps I shake my head at in TM, and there are reps I shake my head at with Shaw or any other company I deal with. While you may have had a poor experience with one rep, others may have had fabulous experiences with the same rep or others. People out there have had just as bad experiences with other companies... I know because I hear about them too. I receive more complaints about other companies than I do about my own... which is odd because it's my job to tell you that no, I'm not going to give you a new phone 15 days into your 3 year contract because you dropped it in the water. We haven't paid off the first one yet. (Or whatever). It's also my job to ensure that I can do whatever IS in my power to make you happy.
Seriously, if you have any issues with your TM service, let me know, I'll try to fix it! Even if you hate us, I'll still try to help you!

You can take your sim card in a Rogers(GSM) phone, put it in another Rogers phone(GSM) and use the same number in the different phone. I do that all the time, it saves the cost of having to pay to get an esn change, which is what would have to be done with the other carriers.
The same can be done with Fido phones as well. Just as long as the other phone is a Fido one as well. Keep in mind, if the phone is a GSM phone and is unlocked, the phone can be used with any GSM phone carrier, with a sim card.

Thx FF. Appreciate your commitment to customer service. Fortunately I already have a father who has worked at Telus 20+ years and usually helps me out when Telus ticks me off.

I was with Cantel/Rogers-Cantel/Rogers for years. I wanted to get a hardware upgrade, but the "best offer" they "only offer to long term customers" was the same as the one I got in the mail a week before. That was a heck of a deal - not. So I dropped them and went Telus mobility. I haven't really noticed a difference, as far as service goes (although I am getting ****ed at the SMS spam messages telus is sending). It would be nice if Telus phones were unlocked so I could upload 3rd party ringtones/wallpaper/apps, etc. to it.
Back on topic, some people have noticed that in the US Cingular has dropped Rokr from their list of available phones. They will no longer offer it.

Thougth I'd let you all know that Telus is coming out with the Razr on Feb 2... This newest version will be EVDO capable. Among other things.
