Man, he'll always be Sid the Kid to me, but he ain't no spring chicken anymore (hockey years wise). The time really does fly. I still remember freshed faced 18 year old Crosby like it was yesterday.

Think its possible the franchise has a side deal where he can get a portion of ownership in the team after he retires with management positions of some sort? Not salary cap eligible but future considerations?

He'll be a case study for economics about how 8.7 million a year went from being absurd 1%er wealth to being what you need to own an average house, mediocre SUV and eat 3 reasonable meals a day.

Totally agree. There was a switch that seemed to click when he was around 25. He seemed to figure out how important his leadership and role modelling was for the game itself and how much bigger the sport was than him and getting a call. He showed huge character. His biography will be interesting to see who influenced him or whether it was just years of strong examples or perhaps the life is finite reality of the concussions.
Unfortunately, the current face of the NHL -- the kid up north -- seemed to flick that switch in the opposite direction at around that same age. It really became all about him.

It's fun to trash the Oilers but it's not super comparable.
Crosby signed a 12 year deal at 14.5% of the cap and he's up for renewal on a contract that covers his 38 and 39 year seasons. He's the only guy that I think took a true discount of the former superstars, and he did it to retain Malkin, Letang, and Fleury.
Ovechkin signed a 13 year deal for $9.5M which was by far the highest salary at the time and 16.8% of the cap. And then took another $9.5M when he was already declining on a deal that most people said would look like an overpayment.
Malkin signed his 8 year $9.5M extension when it was 15% of the cap.
Drasaitl's deal is 15.9% of the cap. It's no discount for sure, but in reality neither Malkin or Ovechkin took discounts on their first major payday's either.
|
Crosby at 14.5% in his PRIME is full on charity. He is hands down a superstar/one of the GOATS and more valuable vs Draisaitl. Oilers paying 15.9%? Mercenary stuff by the german. Especially a team in dire need of depth.

Was thinking the exact same thing. He will own a portion of that franchise.

Frankly, if Sid walked into Dubas' office and demanded a 1 year deal for league max for the rest of his career I would celebrate each time. His impact on this team/city is immeasurable. He's been a model hockey player and model citizen, and he deserves every penny he asks for, even at this stage of his career.
That he's sticking with the same 8.7 is just awesome. Truly the Costco Hot Dog of NHL deals. I can't speak for all Pens fans, but I don't take for granted the fact that I've gotten to see one of the best players of all time play for my team for two decades. He's lived up to all the hype and more.

It's more that Sydney Crosby is unique though, nobody else who is a superstar in the league took a discount like him, he's 1 of 1.
Draisaitl was smart to get the bag from Edmonton, personally I love that he took that organization to the woodshed on this contract.

Being that we all agree is this contract is obscenely under-market, what's the most you would pay for Crosby at this stage?
I'd probably do $10 mil x 5.

I'm so happy for Pens fans that he'll stay in Pittsburgh colors. Sure, it would have been neat to see him play with Mackinnon, but it wouldn't feel right to me.

I'd want to show him the respect he deserves and make sure he makes the most money on the Flames, which would put him at 10.87.

Of course it's for 8.7mill. Steal of a deal for one of the greatest of all-time. Incredible how well he's aged as a player considering there was a point where it seemed like he was done for good

Pretty neat of Sid to line up the 8.7's for his career. I also feel like he's been the most marketable star on both sides of the border for 20 years so his endorsements are second to none. That probably plays into the desire to stay at 8.7 rather than market value.

Honestly would've liked to see him win 1 more and I doubt Dubas can construct a roster capable of that so would've preferred he go to Colorado or something, but can't argue with the GOAT

McDavid and Draisaitl have nothing on Crosby.
They take all they can get, dont give a crap about anything else.
Crosby once again proved he knows how to be a team player, the guy is all class.
McDavid and Draisaitl will win nothing because they will be surrounded by scrubs due to cap implications. Which is because of their contract demands.
Its perfect science. E=NG.

Technically correct. Fantastic signing for the club. I suppose Dubas is GM
But I don’t think Dubas deserves much credit to be honest, other than being in the right place at the right time.
You can’t possibly think Crosby was asking for more

Damn....that guy is awesome!
And still probably owns the most lethal backhand the NHL has ever seen!
