I've been playing the NHL series since it debuted on the Sega Genesis in 92- Always loved it and played a lot- I enjoy it but I'm terrible! I used to buy it, but now I wait for it to hit Xbox gamepass usually around February. I enjoy the "The Show" base ball game much more lately. Never play either online or partake in the HUT or CHEL at all

Once EA Access (now EA Play) started I stopped buying it. Not because I'm extra critical of it but just because I don't play it like I used to 20-30 years ago so waiting isn't a big deal.

I have zero interest in multiplayer and it being called 'Chel' makes it easy for me to avoid. I'd like to smack the people who decided to make that stupid nickname part of the game's marketing.
I tried HUT when I did a playtest for EA earlier in the year where I got two free games and they gave me a free code for NHL 24 2-3 weeks before it became "free". I didn't mind it but it's nothing something I would play often.

You summed up my relationship with the EA's NHL series perfectly!
I still remember the first time I played the original on Genesis at a birthday party. I was completely blown away and in awe of what I was playing!

The first I played it was before we moved here and we came for a visit. My cousin brought over his Genesis to his grandma's (my aunt) and we played it all weekend. We used to play as teammates and one of us would interfere with the goalie so the other would have a wide open net.
After that I wanted a Genesis for Christmas. That was when the Genesis was selling like crazy so my parents told me they couldn't get me one but I ended up getting surprised on Christmas morning.
Anyone else play the Mega Drive version called EA Hockey? It didn't have an NHL licence but it played way faster. So much fun.
I didn't even know this was a thing. Then again I was so young I didn't realize at the time the first one didn't have the actual players, so it's not shocking this went over my head too.

We ended up getting a SNES hoping that NHL Hockey would come out (I loved Super Mario World). I would always go to the game aisle at the Toys r' us in Market Mall to see if by chance there was a release. I finally remember seeing some video game magazine at Mac's in Cambrian Heights and there was an ad for NHLPA Hockey 93 on the SNES.
That was ALL I wanted for Christmas that year.
Did anyone else accidently discover the goalie freezing bug (when the goalie was on the top of the screen)?
I still to this day suck at all the NHL games.....

God those were the days. When to determine if a game you wanted was out, you just kinda had to show up at the store and see.
One thing I remember too is buying the game directly from EA through the mail via money order.
You would get a postcard in the mail before the game was set to release, fill it out, get a money order, and put it all in a envelope and send it back to EA.
None of the stores here had the game so it was the quickest way to get it if you didn't have plans to go to Winnipeg.

Yup.
I remember being so excited for NHL Stanley Cup on the SNES and getting that for Christmas because it happened to show up at Toys R Us and my uncle bought it for me and my brothers for Christmas.
NHL 94 became the much more acclaimed game from that year, but I remember thinking how cool the graphics were on that game even if it was much harder to play with the way the camera worked.
I also remember saving up money to buy WWF Attitude for the PS1 and literally checking every week at EBGames to see if they had it yet.
I had NHL Stanley Cup as well! Those really were the days, when playing was a must during a sleepover.
Before toxic "gaming culture" where we weren't review bombing or harassing developers. I know there's going to be a subset of "NHL 25 sucks!". It's a hockey game, not sure what more they can do?
I think what would make the modern games more enjoyable for me is to take away the broadcast aspects of the game. It all makes you feel like you're watching a game more than playing in it. I bet that can be done in the settings. I'll need to check it out.

I think once you go down the rabbit hole of what people want from this game you realize the devs don't have the simplest job in the world. Some people want the broadcast aspects amped up 10x, while others would like them gone completely. It's a bit like the certain info showing up on the boards or displaying on the ice... I kinda like it but there are legions of people who can't stand it.
Ideally you could tweak everything on and off, which to me is the only way, but I have to imagine that's a lot of work.

I turn the presentation off in all sports games, I want to play a quick game not watch a full game. The Show is bad for this but they have the options for quick play so I'm not going to complain.

I don't remember the freezing bug, but I do remember the wrap-around glitch where the goalie would get stuck on the far post.
