Does feel like they will have to try to drop one of Gourde, Eberle, Tanev, or Tolvanen.
Both Gourde and Tanev are UFAs at year end that I'd have no issue taking for a 2nd. Take a 2nd to take them now, and then probably get another 2nd when you move them at the deadline.

Probably more like a 3rd now and 3rd at the deadline, but point remains, I'd be happy to do that.

Agree, and definitely want to focus on the pending UFAs so as to not lock up another retention slot beyond next season.

Beniers is a top 5 young player in the league IMO. Good value for Kraken and they'll be laughing within a few years, possibly as early as next year.

You gotta bet on your young talent. Besides, Beniers isn't the first player to have a sophomore slump and he won't be the last

Seattle is hoping they can lock him up before the breakout offensive season. Similar to Tkachuk he's pretty astute 200 ft game already too.

Though TBF, Tkachuk likely wanted $2M more and that was years ago.

And Tkachuk was a difference maker right from the beginning.

This is fine. He'll be worth it. Matty will have a good third year, mark it.

Not sure what young is for you, but he is 21 and plays the premier position in the NHL. Drafted to be a #1C.
Even if he doesn't develop into a #1C, he is showing he could be a elite #2 and his contract is fair for that especially for a player that age.
So he is not wrong.

I thinkyou two are talking about different things. I took "top 5" to mean he's one of the 5 best young players in the league, not a top 5 forward. I doubt he's one of the former. This Athletic had him 13th among players 22 and younger (and IMO there's some names behind him that are better - eg, Stankoven, Slafovsky, Cooley, etc:
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/519...king-under-23/
I do think his $7M will be fair in a couple of years and a bargain in year 5.

Ummmm being a 2nd line center isn't top 5 in the league, even for players under 22.

You could make an argument that he's top 5 under 22. You've got Bedard, Carlson, and Fantilli, probably Luke Hughes... is Wyatt Johnson ahead of Beniers?

Buy into young talent, not a hard concept.

Tkachuk signed his second contract after a 77 point season though.
I have no doubt that Beniers will more than live up to this contract, but Tkachuk had proven way more when he signed.

Johnson has more points in less games, on a deeper team. Slafovsky, Nemec, Cooley might have an argument now. Maybe Owen Power (hard to compare D v F).
It's a good contract though. $7M ain't what it once was in the NHL. It's second line salary.

I can buy into that. His point production seemed to take a bit of a sophomore slump last season, but he seems to play the right way and isn't just focused on points. Eventually it will all come together for him. He strikes me as a player that is going to be a really good leader.
