A lot more player movement as well. Probably more 1-2 year deals.

His points are what they are but this guy does everything well.

Tremendous 200'/complete player.

Injuries are a bit of a concern but this is far from a risky contract IMO.

If he gets 85-90 the Flyers are laughing

There's 5 years left on his deal, if he can be effective for 3 more then it's good.

I have a lot more doubts about the deal being good in the last 2 years. A lot of top forwards simply lose a step and become considerably less effective at the ages 33-37. As a whole it's a good deal, but the Flames might need that caphit elsewhere in 3-4 years, when their window opens up.

---

As for TK, I was sure PHI was going to trade him and start a rebuild a year ago. The Flyers got a huge bump from Torts last year, and they still missed the playoffs after losing their goalie. That's why I don't see them getting out of the mushy-middle for the duration of TK's contract, unless Mitchkov becomes a superstar.

A good comparison is the deal we offered Lindholm. I'm glad we dodged that bullet, and I think the Flyers might regret this deal soon.

PS: I'm surprised the Flyers are still paying Bryzgalov and will be for 3 more years... He was bought out in 2013!

I think it’s expected for most long contracts to be not great value at the end.

The only thing that matters is how everyone fits in with Matvei Michkov.

For those unaware, Matvei Michkov, aka The Mad Russian, aka the best* prospect in the NHL, and the player that the Flyers are building their whole rebuild around. He is the favorite to win the Calder next year, ahead of Celebrini or Dustin Wolf. He plays a 200 ft game; he can pass, he can shoot; his ceiling is thought to be Nikita Kucherov. He fell to #7 in 2023 because he had a 3-year contract in Russia, but that contract has been magically terminated, and he recently signed a 3 year contract to be the Flyers top line RW this year.

One would think the Flyers' optimal Cup window would be in Michkov's Year 3 - Year 9. In a perfect world, they would trade Konecny for a player who better fits this window: a $8.75M 29-36 yr old Konecny with Michkov's prime is less than ideal. It can work, but there is probably a better way to build an elite core. McDavid has Draisaitl; MacKinnon has Rantanen/Makar; Kucherov has Point/Stamkos/Hedman. Crosby-Malkin, Kane-Toews, the list goes on and on. You gotta bag that second elite superstar.

My take is that Flyers managements are being soft, wanting to reward Konecny for his long tenured service to the team and community. It's a "good" "moral" way to run a team, not the worst thing in the world, but in contrast to cuthroat Vegas/Florida/Tampa cup-winning model.
