Well, McDonagh is almost 2 million cheaper than Sergachev and his contract expires in 2 seasons. And if Stamkos decided he wasn't going to come back, they needed a replacement.

Its odd that winning cups seems to push teams into being mid for the next decade plus instead of doing what got them there in the first place

I remember when TBL was a well run organization.

Sharks didn’t win cups but were dominant for years. Then they started doing dumb things like allocating money to Evander Kane over Pavelski. Beginning of the end.

TBL has same feel suddenly. Ryan McDonough has stamkos’ money.

No big contracts like this do. It’s just the nature of UFAs - you get good value for 2-3 years, and then they’re bad value.

NHL GMs are perfectly aware of this. They sign deals like this because A) if they don’t, then they don’t get the player, and B) because as an organization they’ve decided the quality of the roster for the next 2-3 years matter more than years 4-6.

I think loyalty and running it back is a real issue in the NHL. Outside of having a Crosby or Mackinnon, at some point you need to move on from players.

Tampa is a team that been retooling. They struck gold with Goodrow and Coleman and have been trying to find that magic again. I think Pittsburgh is in the same boat.

Vegas on the other hand operates like they don’t give a ####.

Easier said than done. You build or destroy it and rebuild it.

Makes zero sense to do this today. Just wait for tomorrow.

Guentzel at a $9.25M AAV and Moser at a potential $4.5-5M AAV gives them roughly $1.8M remaining to find three wingers to fill out their 22-man roster.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Cirelli moved for a cheaper alternative and cap compliance.

It's impressive how they're keeping the quality of their roster intact though.

Why does it feel like tampa always has unlimited cap space.

You mean the team that just walked Stamkos to free agency and traded their 8.5M d-man?

I like these moves for TB. They’re not going quietly into the night.

McDonagh + Moser + Guentzel > Stamkos + Sergachev.

It looks good, but depending on what the numbers are, they may need to cut some more.
