At this stage Tanev is a poor mans Gio in his prime. He's a valuable piece to have as your #3 or 4 shut down D, but to sign to a big contract is a huge mistake. To me the good medium is a 3 year $6M/year contract. On the Leafs where they have to make big strides offensively and defensively, I'm not sure this moves the needle. He's what they should be going for but they still need to add a #1 or #2 dman to move Reilly as the #2. This will inevitably eat into valuable cap space. Treliving signing Reeves looks dumber by the day.

Tanev is 34 years old (35 in December) and puts his life on the line every time he steps on the ice. A 6 year deal would be insane.

Do it, Tre.

I really like Tanev but you have to wonder how much gas he has in the tank. Anything over 4 years makes for a bad deal.

^ I almost responded without even seeing page two here. This is a well known concept, and a key reason you need to acquire the player by the deadline.

He’s a prime Robidias island candidate. I’m guessing that’s what they are banking on

it's pretty crazy to watch Tre operate without looking through Flames-coloured glasses. It's like watching pictures of your crazy ex and going "jesus, wtf was I thinking?"

Yeah, they changed it a few years ago to allow teams to extend recently-acquired players by 8 years, but that only applies if his current contract extends beyond the next trade deadline.

Remember the rumors that the Flames were interested in OEL

Hilarious! Tanev really getting a retirement contract.

Oh Brad, if you had only given what Conroy wanted, you could have had a better playoffs and had months to re-sign Tanev.

Instead, burning assets, contract term, cap space.

Now, who can flames take off your hands to make it work?

Whats the strategy with these long term deals proposed for older players (Tanev, Stamkos)?

Obviously it allows for a low cap hit, but how would it work in reality?? I can't assume the the players will retire after 4 years and walk away from the money. Do they assume they will go on LTIR once they get too banged up?
