The NHL is in the entertainment business, not the hockey business. An entertaining story is far more profitable than say, a Draisaitl suspension for a flying elbow to Barkovs head. The anticipation of a game 7 is more important than Hyman getting suspended for cross checking Zadorov 2 seconds after Soucy got suspended for a similar action.

This is very similar to the NFL and the beneficial calls Tom Brady used to get. It’s the oilers time, according to the script, to do the unimaginable.

Like others have said, sports is just fun. And you can be a hockey fan without being so invested in one team.

And at the end of the day, Calgary is still a richer, cleaner, safer, larger, and more beautiful city than Edmonton. In terms of day to day life, that's what matters.
