Despite PLD's best efforts, he is still much more valuable than Huberdeau
(younger, centre, shorter contract, cheaper contract, contract can be bought out)
Huberdeau is the worst contract in the NHL by far. I will be surprised if we ever get rid of it.

Flames have a lot of kids (or will) that don't need a guy like PLD in the room. Huberdeau's contract is bad but by all accounts he's a great teammate. This team needs that right now.

that's a head scratcher. No idea what the Caps are thinking here.
PLD really must be a locker room cancer. Rarely see a top 3 pick (who isn't a bust) being on his 4th team before he turns 26.

They are thinking you are getting a 26 year old center that still has a ton of potential and promise for what is very much a buy low cost (From a cost of acquisition perspective, not contract).
They got rid of Kuznetsov, it's unlikely Backstrom returns, so they also just really wanted a center.
High Risk but potential High Reward

3rd team in as many years (4th overall), left a trail of disappointment and possibly team contempt in each stop. Better hope the vet heavy Caps can whip him into shape.

Was absolutely in love with him going into that draft year but what a let down he's been. Third team in as many years, four teams at the age of 25. Just bizarre.

They might even be good enough to get pounded in the first round again!

If you do a redraft he might not get picked until Round 2. and gamerboy for the Canucks would have been a 3rd or 4th rounder.

They've won their cup...their cup now is remaining competitive and getting Ovechkin the goal record.
Then they will rebuild after that.
I'd argue Dubois is a great asset for a rebuilding team to acquire for low acquisition cost. If you can rehabilitate him and if he can become a 60-80 point Center again within the next 2-3 seasons, and you then can shop a 29 year old Dubois who is coming off an 80 point season (as an example) you're going to be able to get a good return for him.
Markstrom's trade return this offseason after being deemed untradeable last season shows that GMs have short memories when it comes to impact positions.

Markstrom and Dubois appear to not like each other. They can continue that rivalry in the Metropolitan Division.

He has the biggest EGO out of all the NHLers I've had the privilege's to work with.
That relationship between PLD and Tortz killed this kids drive to be one for the team.

I don't think it's a bad move for the Capitals. When PLD's contract expires he's going to be a few years younger than Kuemper today who has two years left owing on his contract and is essentially a highly paid backup. The Kings get out of the contract but this doesn't exactly solve their goaltending issues or fix the fact that the initial PLD trade was a fireable offense for Blake.

Every team thinks they will be the one to cure PLD of being what it appears he is.
This does leave a hole at centre on LA, which is more interesting.
