Friedman mentioned that Skinmer is likely getting bought out so Buffalo is moving on. Instead of 6 years cap penalty they get to test drive Mangiapane for a year while dumping 3x$9M for Skinner at the cost of the 11th pick. Skinner’s NMC screws the deal as he probably wants a buyout and the chance to pick his team and finally play in the playoffs

They aren’t going to do that. But they probably have one or two gaps to fill. Mainly at center.

Conroy specifically said they aren't going to re-build this team through free agency yesterday.
Doesn't mean they won't do something.

I know this is lazy of me ( I don't know how to find this out) - but what bad contract are out there to take on? What teams are in cap hell that need help and what would that look like?
Would the Flames look to get these and buy them out? Keep until expiring? Flip for more assets later on?

If they buy him out, then what's the point? Mangiapane will likely have cache with an upcoming contract expiry, no need to hustle him with this much cap space.
Buffalo would be picking at 11th this year, so if they want to flip that for taking Skinner then so be it, but that's a very, very remote chance they would.

Yeah, they're building through the draft but a person would be thick headed to think that they shouldn't sign ANY UFAs because they said they won't build the team that way. You have to look at all avenues to build a team and fill holes while you work towards your contention window.

Buffalo buys him out and has 6 years of cap penalties including a 4.5M in 25/26 and $6.5M in 26/27. The point is to not have those penalties and dump the $9M and only taking one year and $5.8M of Mangiapane who could replace the production Skinner had.
Teams have paid more to dump less (Monahan/Marleau)

I imagine Conroy may go after some RFAs and trade a better pick than it would take to sign an offer sheet.
That's an angle I can see him working.

Sounds like Freeman said the Flames will go short term and high AAV in free agency, and a lot of teams may take that approach like Orlov deal.
Would Debrusk take a 3 year 21 million dollar deal to play for a team that will be in the bottom 5 of the league?

It's a different salary cap landscape now with the cap going up and will only go up from here on out. I don't know if agents will bite on short term bridge deals anymore.
Worth a shot but I don't see it .

That's why they have to be 'high AAV'.
I think it's a good strategy: overpay a bit, to get them to come. Then wait 2 years for the cap to catch up a bit, and for the contract to be near expiry (so, easy to take on). Then trade for assets.
Solid strategy IMO.

The CBA is up as well, we could see a lockout. Would you rather make a lot of money the next 2 years, or have a contract tied up through a potential lockout and whatever implications come from that.

Are there UFAs out there that will sign for 1 or 2 years and have enough value to flip?

Try to keep Kuzmenko and Sharangovich before blowing their brains out in UFA.
That said, Conroy didn’t do anything stupid last July 1, so there is a precedent that he won’t do anything stupid this time either.
This is a rebuild, after all.

Stamkos is UFA and Tampa seems like they need to shed cap....

Monahan was a $6 million cap dump for one year. Marleau was similar.
Skinner would be $9 million for three years, or $27 million in total.
According to the PuckPedia calculator, that amount of cap relief would be worth a 6th overall pick all by itself.

Duchene strikes me as a future Flame. 3 x $7.5M.

I don’t disagree with what you have said. The Flames have added a ton of young D as well as picks. They seem to have chosen their path in net.
They need work at getting younger at center and get some direction on the wing. There are a lot if older players up front. Kadri, Huberdeau, Backlund, Mangiapane, Coleman. I’d bet Magiapane or Coleman are leaving somehow this year. They need to make room for guys like Coronato if he keeps progressing.
If the window they are looking for is 3-4 years from now I think the trend looks good on D and in net. But not up front. Some work to do there. I agree your path might be correct. Bridge players until drafted players are ready. Because I don’t see any first or second liners in the AHL. Especially at center unless they move Zary there. I see Sharangovich as a better fit on the wing.
Duchene would fit that bill. First or second line center for 2-3 seasons. Bumps Sharongovich back to the wing. Not sure you’d need to do much more. We have a lot of forwards if that happens and they need to start finding some young centers. That the big hole I see in the plan. Younger top two centers and some direction on the wing.
Gut feel is there are more moves coming in the next 3 weeks or so. It’ll be very interesting to see what happens.
