Someone else will create a similiar site, I have little doubt.

This gives anyone who wants to do that time to scrape the existing data from CapFriendly before it goes dark. I believe that's what CapFriendly did with CapGeek when it shut down (if you look up some older contracts, they show CapGeek as the source if information).

https://puckpedia.com/

Puck Pedia has been around for a bit. I have seen people referencing on these forums but I refused to really check it out because I knew Cap Friendly and it was easy for me to look up. I guess there's no better way to try something different than to be forced to do so... I disagree with that sentiment but there's no other choice.

From the article it seems clubs use CF via API's. They are screwing over fans, media and other clubs too. Clubs could have other proprietary databases and info, but CF is in the mix for providing at a price to them.

Meghan Chayka already making noise about building out a replacement.

There will be a replacement the same way capfriendly came along after capgeek went away

A system as fleshed out as this would cost 100s of thousands to create.
That wouldn’t even cover a power point from a management consultant./s

If they bought this for a few hundred good on the Caps. Its a steal

The league could have bought it and charged a subscription for advanced information, with a free "light" version for fans.

I doubt Washington is really the bad guy here. If a number of other clubs were using it, those clubs were probably interested in buying it too -- and would have probably shut it down for others if they bought it. Washington made the best offer and that's it.

If you're going to be mad about it, blame the site owners for making a good site. I just hope they made a big stack of cash off the deal for all their hard work and years of free service (Kind of makes me sad again about Matt Wuest dying so young).

I'm just surprised a public site was that valuable to a billion dollar club. So much talent out there in the community.

Thanks for that share... also not pleased to hear about this and nice to have an alternative.

I really don't get the move either. Obviously if they want the expertise behind the site and the interface/LTIR algorithm piece hire the guy and pull that piece off the site, but taking the whole public facing website offline just seems to make your whole product as a league less interesting to people who enjoy getting into the strategy.

The NHL (and Rogers as well) really are not great at making their product easy to access. They feel like they have the mentality of a discount airline

I would love to see a business case study around this.

Not in the sense of good or bad but what’s the real asset, multiple, and all that geeky stuff because for a single team to buy it makes me wonder what they are really buying. The connections? The people? It’s pretty interesting.

The NHL clubs already have all the information via the NHLPA, I would be shocked if they didn't have a system set up.

Is it possible the current owners weren’t making money off it and jumped at the chance to sell / join the Caps? We’re all bemoaning the loss of a free site that I doubt made a ton of advertising money. Any idea what clubs would have been paying to access info from it?

The Players Association was a major information provider to that site. Maybe they do something on their own?
