Eh... I'm not arguing. Different strokes and all that jazz... This guy doesn't think he'll ever use the 4x, so why pay for it?
I, on the other hand, would use it all the time. Off road. It's not at all necessary for city driving. Thats all I'm saying...

Didn't mean to offend you with the driving question. I was just asking.

another thing to consider: resale. No one wants a two wheel drive when they can buy a 4.

Just bought an X trail with 4 wheel and very glad that I did. You can run it in 2 wheel drive until you need it. Sure is nice when it gets snowy and icy out to have the 4 wheel option.

Here is a question,

FWD is pretty much the norm for cars nowadays, with the odd exception for performance orientated cars (BMW's) and land-yachts (Cadillacs?).

Has anyone ever made a FWD truck (or FWD/4WD)? If not...why? Is there some logic in having the power under the loads? Is it worth the loss in traction when the truck is carrying no load?

I suspect it has something to do with the robustness (or lack thereof) of transaxles and CV joints. You'll notice that all HD trucks and semis use solid rear axles in order to carry heavy payloads and transfer gobs of torque. Sometimes there still is no substitute for big strong gears...

I drove my 89 silverado (2x4) for 6 years and every winter i ran into the same crappy problem. Rearwheel drive is not good on snow or ice. Period. Its fun cause you can do dohnuts and you can control skids and slides better, but jesus. The first time i drove the gf's all wheel drive subaru in snow i couldn't believe it.

I nearley died every winter on the roads, but you do just need to know how to drive it.

If your cool with learning how to do it properly, or already do know how.. and its not work related (IE you need to go to work sites, off road etc)... go with 4x4.

I would go for a 4x4 with the option to go to 2x4.

Enjoy the $200 fill-ups every 2 weeks =)

That's a fact, full size 4x4s are expensive to run...but it's worth it to me.

Thanks for all the replies. I have decided to forget the whole thing and just keep my Jetta. I only have 20 more months to pay on it and we'll be looking at getting a mortgage soon so it'll be better to have my current low monthly payment and then soon have no payment at all because mortgages are expensive enough.

I have appreciated this thread because I am in the process of purchasing a 2004 Tacoma 4x4.

Not that this is a newsflash, but used car salesmen suck, and even the financing departments are out to screw you. I saved 1.8% on the rate by talking to First Calgary before accepting the financing the the dealership had "shopped around".

I wouldn't own a non 4x4 pickup. Period. Like I said, it's an awful nice thing to have when you need it.
Holy crap - you're only 35 and you have owned 40 vehicles??? Wow. I'm 52 and I have only owned 14 vehicles in my life (3 of which I have now - including my 350Z and Jeep TJ). I've had my license since I was 16 and had my first car at 18. I've always had at least one vehicle. I also drive a lot of miles (up until recently I was coming into Calgary from Strathmore every day). Anyway, you must go through a vehicle every 3 or 4 months - very impressive .
