I really liked the NA U23 team though. They were the most exciting thing about that tournament.

So they are going to the Olympics, great!
Why do we need an invitational then?
Maybe make it 4 on 4

I wasn't aware the IOC had made a decision for 2030 -- and I guess they haven't done so officially, but I guess in November, they did announce that France is the preferred candidate.
With SLC likely for 2034, looks like it's time to fire up the bid for Calgary 2038, the 50th Anniversary.

Im happy this tournament is replacing the All Star game. It would be nice if it was bigger, but I don't think there's enough players for other countries to make a team unless you do a Team Europe.

I like the 4 team tournament because it means more international best on best hockey. Have been wanting international friendlies and this basically ticks that box.
2026 in Italy. The last time Canada sent NHLers to Italy it did not go well.
2030 in France. Much easier to convince everyone to come play in the Alps than it was for the past games in Asia.
Surprised 2034 wasn’t announced given Salt Lake is likely getting those games.

They are going to use the NHL sized ice instead of the IIHF size.
Also Russia can play, but they just can't use their flag.
Hope Crosby is still playing at a high level by then. Then he can pass the C to Bedard and there will never be a McDavid "era".

I believe Switzerland actually has first right of refusal for 2038. So any new bids for winter games may not be until the 2042 Olympics if Swiss do follow through with hosting for '38.

We missed that boat already. 2026 was our chance but the fuddy duddys here killed that.

Perhaps just easier if fan's just gives the NHL/NHLPA their money without having to do these tournaments that are clearly a money grab. I love this notion of Best on Best. It's NHL players vs NHL players. There won't be a large contingent of players from outside of the league that we will be introduced to.
This style of tournament goes back to the 72 Summit series where your typical hockey fan really had little to no clue how good some of this Soviet Union players were. That hockey was an eye opener for people as it showed just how far advanced other countries and systems were.
Fast forward to Canada Cup's /World Cup in the 80's and 90's and it's still a novelty and interesting. This tournament won't showcase anything and the winners really won't matter. If this really was something serious, it would be held more regularly. It's not like the Olympics or World Jr's or World Championships or other more serious tournaments ever take time off

2026? McDavid will be 29 and likely the captain.

I think there's no way Crosby won't be the captain if he's on the team. Then next time McDavid will be over the hill and it'll be Bedard's world.
