I wonder if Roy has his beard shaved by the introduction presser? Or if he wins the battle with Lou on the 'no facial hair' mandate...

Knowing Lou, he probably already got it in writing that he has to shave it off.

EDIT: And I just noticed the photo in the press release is sans beard.

Hahaha, wait, what is this with Lou not allowing facial hair? So his team's never did playoff beards in the past? That's hilarious.

I think his policy may also include long hair. He likes his teams to be "clean cut" in the traditional sense...

Playoff beards are his exception. But it goes deeper than that. Players have to wear suits at all times even though the NHL has relaxed its dress codes. I'm curious to see what the Islanders do with other teams recently in outdoor games wearing costumes when walking in for the game. Last time Lou had an outdoor game, the Devils didn't even have a special jersey (just their red/green retro). I had heard the league had one created for them but he said no.

The arena maintenance staff at UBS arena must reinforce the hinges to all the dressing room doors and the latches that open/close the bench areas and penalty boxes. This work order is compulsory now that Patrick Roy is the coach.

Sometimes with old timers, there is a method to the madness in some ways. Old school methods in sports, business and politics etc a lot of times do not really equal a better player, worker etc.

They can emphasize and set standards for cultures, teams, organizations and more. The boss has spoken so to speak, right or wrong, goes a long way.

So if a rookie or a drafted player thinks they can come on in and change things with clothing or facial hair wise, it's an eye opener. If a 4 time Cup Champion, arguably the best to play the position and more coach needs to make the adjustment, then nobody get's leeway.

I do think sometimes the military style management system people in sports, business and politics employ, it can set the tone for good and sometimes bad. It's good to know where you stand.

I am all about Roy taking over and getting back into the league, seems strange it would be NYI. I figured Ottawa or Montreal maybe one day

They didn’t want to lose him to Ottawa.

Lou doesn’t wait unless your name is Kadri.

The greatest playoff goaltender of all time has worked and earned his way back to the NHL. He deserves this!

Seems to have had some success with the Remparts. It'll be interesting to see how he does in his second stint and with more experience.

Yeah, I heard a while back that Ottawa had him in their sights.

Not surprised he is back. He seemed to want to come back and IMO, is probably a good coach.

We will see. He left the Avs becuase he had issues dealing with pro players and because his ego was bruised that he didn't/wouldn't have any of the power and control as a GM would.

Not so sure he's changed or humbled in that regard. He was coach and GM for his time in junior, so he had that full power he wanted. He really wasn't a serious candidate for any coaching gig this past year.

No lose situation for either side. Wait to see details, contract could just be to the end of the season.

Lou has hired someone who will provide him and his team a fairly specific change of pace to try and kick start them this season. Lou also hired someone who has nothing to lose in regards to his current NHL coaching perception. Worse case scenario the Isles miss as they were likely to do anyway, best case scenario is they make the playoffs.

For Roy, nothing to lose even if it's a contract just to the end of the season. He brings the Isles to the playoffs and either gets extended or at worst, increases his profile as a coach for the next opening somewhere. Worst case scenario he doesn't get another job in the league, when it wasnt clear if he wouldve before this anyways.

Yes, if he's planning a power struggle with the GM, he's joined a team with the wrong GM. I could see Ottawa not wanting to invite that drama with a rookie GM in Staios.

Lou wants a guy that will lose it every so often. If Darryl was a lot younger and wanted to move out east like Brent did with NJ that one season under Lou, Lou would've had him lined up in a heartbeat instead of Roy.
Oh I was kinda guessing this is Lou’s successor by his own intention. No evidence of that but just pure speculation on my own part. They’re similar in a lot of ways in that they’re demanding. Roy is more vocal but Lou works behind the scenes. I don’t think there’s any power struggle at play at all. Just Lou recognizing that is time is winding down.
