Markstrom and the D shaved an entire goal against per game from the start of the season.

Makes sense as it was always going to take some time for the team to adjust to the new defensive system.

The analytics still don't love our defensive system, they mostly attribute it to Markstrom playing lights out.
That said, it seems that the defensive breakdowns in this system are more predictable, and less of a fire drill, which probably lets the goalies anticipate them a little bit better.
IMO, the biggest advantage defensively of this version of the Flames compared to last year's is that they minimize passes that make Markstrom scramble in his net. Passes that don't give him enough time to get set up.

Markstrom was pretty clearly strong in both road wins with the Flames giving up a lot of ten bellers.
Pretty sure the stats are showing just that.

I agree.
And?
This team in its current constitution is going nowhere. Markstrom is playing well, which means he has value.
So sell him.

GOAT!
|
Two things...
First: Markstrom has been insanely good as of late. Like, Vezina good.
Second: Play Wolf like he's the starter while Marky's out. Nothing against Vladar, but this is yet another opportunity to finally see what "NHL Wolf" looks like. Let him play. Give him the net and tell him it's his until Markstrom's back, and then let's see what we have.

I think that's where the Management is torn. Is Markstroms play akin to lipstick on a pig or can the sum of the whole end up making noise and stealing a round or 2.
I don't think we will have two players for a playoff run either. Lindholm and one of the D men are gone. Maybe all 3 pending FAs.

WTF?!? Is Markstrom getting his rest for a trade or is he resting for the Flames playoff run? Man, the Flames are at an impossible crossroad this season!

Well dumpster fire Vladar tonight should right a few wrongs and prompt the team to go with Wolf for the next 2 games.

Hopefully Markstrom's back soon because he has been great. It's a good opportunity for both Wolf and Vladar.
|
So .898 to .937 should become .976 after this break. Just via math.
After his next break they shouldn’t have any more goals against.

The Stage I upgrades were a big success, looking forward to Stage II Markstrom when he returns.
Then schedule the Stage III upgrades in Late March and we should have a full-on cheat code if we are still in the playoff picture.

I saw a chart a couple weeks back where both Wolf and Vladar were among the worst in the league for Goals saved above expected, and Wolf's numbers if prorated per 60 minutes would be particularly bad. Small sample size, but Wolf does have a fsircwsys to go at the NHL level yet. Hopefully they found some things for him to work on from his last stint and have improved those.
