Weird league. No team nicknames or logos. Do they not want to market themselves?

They should do all shootouts using mini-sticks!

Objectively the Bear idea is the best. I just think they're hesitant to test-drive the 'Bears Idea' in the Women's game.

There could potentially be some pretty tough questions asked should things...go sideways, pic-a-nic baskets stolen and the like...and the outright evisceration. Theres still always that.

Neither rule is good. They deliberately got rid of the “same guy can take the shootout” that used to be there in international play because of the stupid results. And why should a shorty cancel out the punishment for the penalty?

SHG cancelling a penalty will never happen...NHL wants more goals not less

They're coming eventually I believe.

I think they didn't want to wait longer to get playing games, so they started as soon as they could with the bare minimum. I think you can kind of look at it as PWHL version Beta.

Also I'm pretty sure they have a single owner right now. so that might have something to do with it?

Can someone explain this league vs CWHL? Does this relegate teams like the Inferno to CFL type tier?

The CWHL folded in 2019.

This new league has arisen from the ashes of the Premier Hockey Federation.

what if ultra aggressive PK that leads to both more PP goals and more SHG in aggregate?

Okay...come on CP...we can come up with some better rules than these!

How about in the shootout the shooter can only have 1 skate?

And if that shooter chooses to get a crampon for their skate-less foot they have to accept a shorter stick!

If you're going to make it Circus...at least make it a good one!

OK, but to compensate, the goalie can only have one pad.

And if the puck strikes him directly on his unpadded shin, so that he falls down, cries out, or winces in pain, it counts as two goals.

A special award will be given each season to the goalie who resorts to the funniest stance in order to protect his leg. This will be called the John Cleese Trophy, and will be presented personally by the Minister of Silly Walks.

Yeah, I don't get that at all. It's boring and limits marketing and merchandising.

I watched the highlights of a couple of the games and thought it was pretty high quality hockey. If there were teams out west, I would definitely take in some games. I'm going to try to get into it anyway.

I totally agree with you guys, but my impression was they wanted to start the league ASAP and thought maybe that played into it. Maybe it will end up helping the marketing in the long run? At the beginning of the full season next year you can have all the new logos, names, etc. now that they aren't so rushed? I could be totally wrong in this.

Back in October, the PWHL filed for US trademarks for these six team names:
  • Toronto Torch
  • Minnesota Superior
  • Montreal Echo
  • Boston Wicked
  • Ottawa Alert
  • New York Sound

These are remarkably awful. You'd think at least one or two would be okay, but it's amazing they came up with 6 truly terrible names.

Fan reaction to the names leaking was not kind, so it's not surprising if they just decided to drop them altogether and work on team branding for next season: https://thehockeynews.com/womens/pwh...whl-team-names

How many games a year do we see a SH goal followed by a PP goal on the same powerplay? Maybe it motivates teams to take more risks on the PK but I doubt it. Easiest way to stop a PP goal is sound defense, not taking risks to score a shorty and end the PP early. So seems like a pretty useless rule change.

The shootout rule is terrible. Shootouts already are a mixed bag. Let's make them even worse by making it a 1v1 of top player vs top player to determine the result to a team game.
