I'm not sure surprised it's being challenged and it's the NHLs own fault due to the lack of consistency with suspensions.

Honestly this suspension could have been anywhere from 2-6 games and you'd probably be able to find precident.

Parros has been terrible in that role.

Thats essentially what Unions do.

In this case they are defending a member, which is their job, although he did assault someone with a weapon.

However the NHL is also to blame for being wildly inconsistent.

The standards between employees and employer should be standard and clear and I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that there is no 'Motto Plaque' in the NHL offices for player safety that say "Standard and Clear."

This is essentially two children having a slap-fight.

The crazy thing is that the person who was assaulted with that weapon is also a member of their union, and they evidently don't give a crap about him.

The NHLPA always sides with the offender over the victim, even though both are paying dues.

I agree that that is essentially what labour unions do now, but it was not their genesis from my perspective.

I spent the early part of my career in the forest industry. Unions in that industry were solely born out of worker safety. It was only later that they focused on compensation as companies soon realized it was in their best interests to not kill, maim or otherwise injure their workers.

Welcome to Union work? Its unapologetic hypocrisy.

I have never and never will propose that workers shouldnt have the right to bargain collectively, but Unions in their current form are broken.

For pretty much exactly the reasons you're outlining.

The solution here is for Perron's fine/lost salary to go straight into Zub's pocket. Then the PA wouldn't really have the money excuse

Unions protect the worst while the best pay for it. Pick a union any union that's a union in a nutshell .

Can Zub appeal the unions appeal? Like this guy ####ing walked me like a hit man , where's my rights?

Unions really only protect the #### birds of the flock in modern times.

Being terrible is a requirement of the role so, in reality, he's performing up to expectations.

They both still pay the same union dues though. When someone is suspended they don't make an income for those missed games and the money instead goes to a player assistance fund. So it isn't about fairness or preventing injuries but more to do with increasing players earning. If Zub is out for a month he still gets paid the same amount when all is said and done.

Perron now has the option to take it to an independent arbitrator

Ridiculous suspension with some of the other things that are suspendable for less.

He cross-checked someone in the head.

The correct response isn’t to criticize the harsher suspensions, it’s to criticize the light ones.
