NEVER want to see players get injured.

But if Markstrom were out for a while, it would give the Flames the chance to play Vladar and Wolf, and see what they can both do. Long term for the franchise, that is exactly what they need.

But your minutes don't add up to anything close to what you're suggesting, either. An NHL game is 60 minutes. A sheltered 8 - 10 minutes means they're finding the easiest 8 - 10 mins, which leaves 50-52 minutes for the top two pairs.

That's really difficult.

It’s time to give wolf a bit of a run to see where he’s at. Mr Vladar needs an opportunity as well. Good opportunity for both if Markstrom’s hand is broken.

10-14 mins are usually special teams play. That leaves about 40 mins for the top 2 pairings at even strength.

The problem is when a D takes a penalty IMO.

Sure, but PP/PK is all top 4 four D-man ice time. And PK is harder minutes than 5 on 5.

Yeah, I don't want to see a player injured, but it will be good to see the other guys get more opportunity. Vladar needs to be a stretch of games in order for a proper evaluation, and Wolf is ready to get some games in too.

Or away games when you know the other team will be putting their top lines out against the third pairing. Those are going to be some pretty tough minutes for that pairing.

Yeah, I think I agree with you. But the problem comes later in the year when the top 2 pairs are starting to feel the impacts of playing 21-24 minutes around February or so and then you have a tired top pairing heading into the final playoff push.

Might as well break up Weegar and Andersson now. Only one trade/injury away from having to do it anyways, might as well test out other configurations now.

Playing them 20-24 minutes a night isn't an issue. Andersson, Weegar, and Hanifin have been averaging 20+ minutes per game for almost the entirety of their careers, and it's a requirement for any top4 defenseman. They should be well conditioned for it.

The only dman I'd worry about wearing out right now is Tanev due to age and wear/tear, but even then, he's been averaging 20-21 mins a night for the past decade.

If Hanifin and Tanev are traded without replacement, Huska probably won't be stupid enough to play Andersson and Weegar 25-30 mins a night and risk injuring them or wearing them out in a losing cause.

This practice had no Swedish or Finish it seems.

It's good to have depth in the farm system, now when we see a player taking a maintenance day, I'm excited to see the next prospect up instead of guys like Ritchie, Nordstrom, or Richardson dressing.

A trade for Tanev or Hanifin might involve an expiring D coming back that the Flames kick loose after this year. Like that Klingberg talk. Or even Brodie.
