Seems like some people on CP want him to fail. I’m all for a “let’s go Huberdeau” chant. Certainly can’t hurt things if you want him and the team to improve.
It's almost as if nobody here has gone through a tough time - mentally especially - and thinks that money somehow softens that. It does, but only in the long run, not at the time.
The guy needs confidence and needs to know he's appreciated; struggles be damned! Yes, we'd like to see more, but maybe this is a place fans CAN actually make a difference...and wouldn't that be a fantastic result?
Personally, I feel really bad for the guy - he's in the centre of a maelstrom that is not of his own making, and yes, he signed the big contract, and yes, he could "retire"...although it's unlikely. So we are stuck with him and he with us (unless that mythical Johnny-for-Jonathan trade somehow materializes).
Nothing to lose by cheering the guy on - same as we'd do for our children playing when we know that he/she is nowhere near the best on the team.
Have people actually been that hard on him though?
Unless I missed it, fans haven't been booing him, throwing things at him or anything overly negative.
People complaining on a message board certainly shouldn't be getting him down further; I doubt he reads CP.
There's also still fans here who think he's making elite passes every game & it's his linemates who are the problem.
I see your point in theory, support can help someone get going, but I don't think he's had any lack of it.
Booing while getting paid $10M is hardly bullying. He knew what he was getting into. It’s not him employer giving him a hard time. Fans who pay are getting jack out of him. Sure, try the cheering route. If that doesn’t work then what? I just think if you’re signing that type of deal you should be able to handle the boos that come with the expectations.

Doesn't the "Let's Go Huberdeau" chant sound condescending?
Wasn't something like this done with Trea Turner in Philadelphia (Phillies)? Signed a huge contract, was off to a poor start, a fan posted a video about fans cheering him on instead of jeering him, and it seemed to help turn his season around?
I may be off on what exactly took place, but I read this somewhere. The situation seems a bit similar.
100%, Turner’s season took a sharp turn that exact game and he never looked back, one of the hottest hitters in baseball from that point forward.
Unlikely just a coincidence

Looch specifically spoke about how it felt when fans had his back and how much more he liked to play the game after almost retiring.
“The people and the fans, and living here, was much better than I thought it would be when I got traded here [from Edmonton]. I really enjoy being a Calgarian. Even when I didn’t touch the puck, just going in on the forecheck, the fans just ‘Lu’ing.’ Yelling ‘Luu’ and all that type of stuff. They made it fun for me again. I thank the people here for that and I appreciate them making it fun for me again… Coming here and playing home games, the fans made it fun every single day for me.”
agreed, if he is that mentally weak, thats on him. As a Canadian market, Calgary is not that hard on the players. If he was playing in Montreal or Toronto, they would destroy him.
I think a Huberdeau chant would come across as sarcastic trolling at this point. There is no way he would believe it was actually meant to encourage him.

Yup. I don't think Markstrom was made better by sarcastic cheers at an early save last year.
Not sure about the chanting, but I'd be down for a video of fans supporting him. If a bunch of us took videos of ourselves expressing support for him and could send them to someone who could edit them together and get it to him that would be cool.

I imagine this chant would go somewhat like those old "Ricolaaaaaa" commercials with the guy in the Swiss Alps.
Anyway, in the "old" days there was a section, maybe 223 or 224, that used to start those "Iggy Iggy Iggy, oi oi oi" chants and that was good fun.
And why are we discussing the merits of this and how it looks whether it's "sad" or not? It's professional sports which are supposed to be fun. If you want to chant and think it's fun, DO IT!! Especially if you believe it helps the team perform better. Isn't that the whole point of home ice?
