Other than sentimental feelings for the players getting drafted, what actual value is there for 32 teams lugging their operations across the continent? If you actually think about the logistics, that's a lot of work. Less cost for the league and it's not like the NBA/NFL drafts are not spectacles....they are much so than the NHL. There's just no need for the teams and their staffs to actually be there.

Honestly- if I was the actual player, it would be a lot less stressful with just being able to hang out with my fellow drafted players.

Makes a lot of sense.

It will look a lot cleaner and you gets to see the war rooms a reporter in each city.

Hopefully picks being made quicker.

This is the NHL we're talking about.

We could bang this whole thing out in 12 minutes with a handful of fax machines.

One of the few things that the league did right and made it unique is now gone.

Yeah, really sad I never made it to one. It was definitely on the bucket list.

Is the NHL making more bad decisions than good ones these days? Seems like it. Is there any pro sports league more in need of a regime change?

The NHL top brass suck. Like, F-.

Has anyone watched the NFL or NBA draft?

It’s a lot better than the nhl and bigger spectacle. This is the right move.

This makes a lot of sense in this day and age. Time to move on from antiquated ideas/practices.

For sure. But I’m still sad about it.

It is a bigger spectacle, but not because the teams are WFH. It’s because many of the players they are drafting are already stars and fans are very invested in the picks. Just not like that for hockey.

And put more NHL games up against the NFL?

If your goal is to hurt attendance, this is exactly how you do it

Not only the NFL, but the tail end of the MLB season.

That said, the Flames won their Stanley Cup on May 25, 1989. The 80-game regular season began on October 6, 1988. If the league tightened up their schedule a bit, especially during the playoffs, there would be no need for hockey to drag on into June.

Doesn't the NFL just play on Thursday, Sunday, and Monday? I am sure the NHL could work around that. Those aren't typically strong NHL nights anyway.

Thursday is huge for the NHL. Last Thursday the NHL had 15 games on. Tomorrow it has 11.

What matters more, in terms of putting bums on seats, is that the NHL does not want to collide with the end of baseball season. It takes a lot of ticket sales to fill an MLB ballpark, and those people are not going to hockey games at the same time.

Friday is High School football

Saturday is College football

If I'm the NHL I want to go head to head against any form of football the least amount possible.

The PGA Tour moved their playoffs away from the NFL completely.

I was able to attend the draft in 2000 at the Saddledome. It was, I should say, more interesting than fun, since I did not know anyone who was personally involved. Just the kind of event for a nosy, geeky, interested-in-the-business-side hockey fan such as myself.

The friend who went with me, however, got bored and checked out early.
