Markstrom needs to be a difference maker if we have any chances of being a playoff contender. He was solid in goal and made the timely saves when needed. Hope it continues.

As usual I will give a thanks out to the summaries I read, as a way to help you gauge engagement with your summaries. They're a welcome sight after a long offseason.
I listened to some of the game and watched some while working on a deadline for the office, so the game never had my full attention. But I wonder how the defensive approach will go in the long term as players get more accustomed to it. Seems like they're very much going through the growing pains with it so far.

Bingo mentioned it in his write-up, but I definitely noticed a deeper team on the ice. All of our lines were pretty solid (albeit, outplayed as a team), it just felt like every line was fast and competent.

It’s interesting. They gave Mang a chance on the national team, he shone.
They elevate him to play with good players and he stands out
Maybe he’s one of those guys whose buttons you can push by giving him a vote of confidence

Great to see him fitting in to the NHL though and a potential bright future.

okay thats 7
he was 13th, looks like a steal
not many of those guys have proven anything either

Yes and the comment was that he would go top 5 so 7 is not top as I said.
They have proven more than he has, which as I said isn't a negative about him but saying he would go top 5 is not true at all. Even saying he is a steal before he has done anything seems needlessly premature.

Always thought he was fine with Coleman and Backlund just not the same shooting percentage we had come to expect.
But ideally Mangiapane can blossom into a consistent offensive performer and then you can plug a younger player with Coleman and Backlund while still keeping it a possession monster of a line.
That would kind of change the outlook for this team IMO.

I'm sure getting his shoulder fixed also helped.

Cool. Didn’t know they fixed it between switching linemates :-)

Whereas I didn't know that you could form a solid impression of a player in two periods.
My point was, it doesn't matter what buttons you push if the machine is broken. Motivation wasn't Mangiapane's problem last season. He was physically unable to finish the way he did before.

Do the fancy stats not count any more. Along with Kadri, and maybe because of Kadri and Sharangovich Coranato was dominated 5 on 5. He was limited to 9:55 es toi
If Sutter was here he might be on his way to the Wranglers.

rookie has bad possession numbers in his first NHL game - send him to the minors!

You would have a point if the game story and comments since were glossing over the actual game play, but that wasn't the case at all.
The opening of the story talked about flipping the script from out playing teams and losing, to getting owned and finding a way to win.
Mentioned Kadri as a 5% CF player in the stats section.
Called the goaltender the player of the game, and that he stole it.
So "do fancy stats not count anymore" is a brutal take.

All true. I was specifically questioning your excitement about Coronato. He had a couple of really nice plays in a game where he was playing on a 4th line caliber against an elite line.
So you think that Coronato's performance 2-3 good shifts versus 15 bad shifts was better than okay? Does he have a spot a PP specialist?
"Then just solid the rest of the way … the puck just follows him. A couple of shots on another powerplay, a good setup for Nazem Kadri in the third.
Good things just happen when he’s on the ice."
He was on the ice for 2 out the 3 Jets goals. Were you referring to good things happening for the Jets?

I'm pretty sure Bingo mentioned that Coronato took time to settle in. That's exactly how I saw it.
He had a lot of miscues and looked lost on plays in the defensive end at times. That said it was his 2nd NHL game! Most rookies take time to figure out the defensive side of the game. One of the reasons I'm not too harsh on him in that regard is that most of the team was off sync defensively. When the vets aren't as quick to react to developing plays, it takes them even longer to communicate with the rookie, and work as a unit.
What encouraged the likes of Bingo and myself were the plays, and opportunities he had offensively. The puck seemed to follow him around, and he had a lot of shot attempts, and near misses.

Yeah that line got worked for sure.
Not sure 100% of that is on Coronato though.
The rest is true ... puck follows him. He turned nothing into something a few times, and looked good on the first PP unit in his first real game.
I didn't say they dominated.
I didn't say he was elite defensively.
Hockey fans are excited about rookies with skill doing good things. He certainly managed to be noticeable in a positive way many times.
You'll have to show me a shift chart that shows he gets a gold star on only 3/18.

Outside of Mang or Markstrom I don't think anyone deserved a high grade from that performance. Dominated on shots and we turned the puck over way way too much. I don't think many would debate the result was good but there is clearly room to improve.
There are always individual moments of good play shift to shift and I don't think it diminishes anything to discuss the parts of players games they liked

Lindholm?
GWG, assisted on the SHG, great on the PK, 21-4 on faceoffs, some physical play. I thought this game was much better for him than most of the ones I saw last year.

Until he showed up for that GWG I didn't think he was doing anything noteworthy at all. Nice to see he had a great day on the dogs though.
