Best player on the ice for either team tonight. He is exactly what this teams needs.
Some really good things to take away from the game in general tonight aside from Coronato's play. Sharangovich and Ruzicka looked good as well. I was also happy with Backlund, Kadri, and Dube. On defense, Zadorov and Oesterle were really engaged.
Huberdeau made some decent plays that just couldn't connect, but he seemed to be trying pretty hard.

Kadri was...mediocre? Tanev was roughly even and everyone below him was worse:

From the GameScore Impact Card, it is clear that the Captain (trying to set an example) and the youngsters fighting for spots (except Schwindt and Hunt) all had positive impacts, and all the established vets were fairly close to neutral or had negative impacts. Pretty much what one would expect from a preseason game. It's unlikely that all of Coronato, Ruzicka, Oesterle, and Sharangovich will be significantly better than the rest of the team come regular season.
Frankly, Schwindt doesn't seem to bring much for someone fighting for a spot on the roster. I'm kind of wondering why they're still keeping him around.

I gather that with the injuries at forward, they've been keeping everyone that might be able to step in as 4th-line centre. Both Hunt and Schwindt are in that conversation, and neither one helped his case tonight.

Coronato is a breath of fresh air. So much more fun watching him than some of the old farts on the team (no offense to old farts).
I'm trying to figure out who Huberdeau has chemistry with. It's something you would hope to see even if it's just pre-season. It looks like he is trying but I'm not convinced he ends up playing with Lindholm, something about those two that doesn't click together.

Coranato was the best player on the ice last night. He was all over the place. Even during the first period where the team was trying to find it, he was all over the ice creating. He's got something that special players have, the puck seems to just follow him all over the ice.
A very smart player who plays with a lot of pace and has a great shot. Just an absolute stud.
Felt like the team as a whole looked good for the most part. Marky let in an absolute stinker, but then didnt collapse and actually played really solid after so hopefully thats a good sign.
Lindys back. His compete is fantastic. First period he was taking some extra stuff away from the play and he was taking numbers and took every opportunity to give it right back. On his goal he got taken down away from the play, got up, waited for the ref to look away and slashed the guys stick in half which gave him the free lane to shoot. Absolutely love that guy. Straight beauty.

Coronato has been the best flames forward since main camp opened.
I think he was trying to do too much in Penticton which is why he looked like he struggled a bit.
But he's been lights out on both sides of the puck all pre-season long.
We've now tried Yegor and Andrew on the 1st line, I think it might be worth looking at Matty on Huberdeau's wing.

Hard not to get excited for Coronato who looks amazing out there with a killer shot and great all around play. Glad the team won after getting down early. I am so ready for the real games to start.

This isn't directed at you (I assume you were just making a casual, positive comment), but I think people might be getting a little ahead of themselves with Coronato a bit.
Has he been great so far? Yes. Has he been the best Flame in pre-season, on both sides of the puck? Yes. However, it IS pre-season, and he is fighting for a job, unlike the vets who are going at 80%. Has he shown enough to make the team and give the fans reason to be excited? Absolutely. But I think a reasonable expectation for the season is still probably 30-40 points. If he works his way into a regular spot on PP2, maybe an outside shot at 50 points, if everything goes right for him. But I think even that is VERY optimistic.
He isn't going to be the Flames' best player this year. And he only played 34 games a year at Harvard - so it's reasonable to assume (expected, even) that he'll hit a wall at some point.
Lots of reason to be really excited about him as a player. As long as people realize that 30-40 points is what that likely means. At best. Last year, 5 rookies hit 40 points, and only 1 hit 50. Thirty points puts you in the conversation for top 10. Just saying.

Last years rookie scoring was one of the worst in years though. Barzal as an example got 85 points his rookie year. Most years someone gets over 60 points too. Kaprizov was a PPG his rookie year. Pettersen had a great rookie year. (I only went back 6 years)
I'm not expecting Coronato to get 40+ points but for me there is quite often a Coronato type prospect who ranks around or outside the top 20 in the NHL that surprises. When is the last time the Flames had that guy that played better than expected and was the big talk around the league as a surprise rookie. For once, why not the Flames? If he can put up 25 goals and 50 points, that would really improve the Flames depth scoring this year.

I'm all for it!. But comparing him to Barzal, Kaprizov and Pettersen is probably not a great plan. All I am saying is that people should have reasonable expectations for him. And 30-40 points for a rookie is really good.

1) It's preseason
2) I know we're looking for reasons to believe Markstrom is still broken
3) am I super worried, no. Because if they're putting a lot of stock in one preseason game, they ended up winning. This is a game they woudl have lost last year.
4)it's preseason so I don't think we should overthink this too much.

Coronato’s forechecking was incredible. Some great defensemen on the other side and he was a nightmare for them all game
Also ran over a guy who almost won the Norris last year

Coronato looks great- much better than I anticipated. Very promising!
Markstrom looks how many of us feared... At this point I would be willing to pay to see him gone. If we could turn back time and attach the 1st that we attached to monahan to instead send Marky out, that would have been the move.

I didn't love the top line's chemistry... I am still not sold on Huby-Lindy being a good pairing.
What about taking a look at Huby-Ruzicka-Coronato?

Seems like Huberdeau and Lindholm don't really click with anyone right now

I could be wrong, but one thing that crossed my mind is that Huberdeau's style seems to be more unpredictable which I don't think gels well with Lindholm, who seems to rely more on structure and set plays.

Which is why I think the flames should wait a little while before signing that big contract with Lindy.

I'm not expecting it but it does happen. Even Barzal was 13th OV in his draft. Was it expected he was going to get 85?
Tons of 50-point rookie years in the last decade from the unexpected or guys rated similar to Coronato
Barzal
Bunting
Panarin
Stone
Gourde
Forsberg
Nylander
Connor
Boesser
DeBrincat
Domi
That is 11 guys in about a decade similar rated prospect to Coronato that had a 50-point rookie year.
For once, can we just have that guy? Maybe Johnny who had 64 was that type but he was rated pretty high by the time he came here so expectations were a bit higher.

Sure would be nice - and just what the organization needs.
But the Flames' curse is never going to allow it, I fear.
