Plus they are still in build mode. He has the talent to be a 90 point guy, maybe not consistent 90 points but 80+ most years.

Paired with another star maybe some 100 point years. If the cap is close to $100 mil in 3 years, what will a 80-100 point player get? I'm thinking $10-$11 mil maybe more. $8.5 mil would look great when that time comes. Right now, I'm not sure he would get $8.5 mil on a 8 year deal either. Probably $8 mil.

See the NJ Devils, that's what Anaheim should have done with this deal.

I think ANA messed up on this one despite the low cost. When is their window? If it's in the next 3 years then it's a great deal. However, I don't see them making the playoffs in the next 2 years. 8 years would've helped them build around Zegras when they finally become relevant again.

With the ability to just accept his QA and walk after year 4, I hate these deals.

When you hold the hammer, 2 years or long term.

Yup. If the Ducks were a cap team that planned on contending now then maybe this would make sense.

But as a building team and with a rising salary cap it would have made more sense to overpay for 1-2 years and then have him locked up for when the cap explodes a bit.

This. People see the highlights and think he’s much better than he is.

What people think of the player vs what the market says he’s worth is different. This is about strategically signing your players for the best bang for your buck. I’d give him 8 x 8 now knowing he’s not the top guy that leads you to a cup.

Unless the plan is to trade him before the 3 years is up I don’t see why bridging him because he’s overrated in your opinion is even part of this discussion

I honestly don’t see Zegras as a player to build around. If he hadn’t scored 2 fancy goals, he’d be relatively unknown. Good complimentary top 6 player, but a 8 year offer right now sounds like an insane idea to me personally

What hammer? All Zegras had to do was refuse to sign anything but a 3-year deal, and it looks like that is exactly what he did.

Contrary to popular belief, GMs don't have a magic mind-control ray that makes agents stupid.

So long as they have not sewered their relationship with the player this could work out really well as they get three good productive years at the front for cheap and can still get a lot of Prime years in the next deal and not be forced to do a long term deal that takes him into his mid to later 30's.
Although these cheap 3 years are rebuilding years, so not much gained from them. They will pay a tonne on his next contract when they are hopefully starting to contend.

Yeah but they'll already have Draisaitl signed in his third year so he can really build his value.

Don't discount the idea that he preferred a shorter deal in hopes of upping his value. He's had nothing to play with and might finally have some others around him who can help him produce more.

What hammer?
It’s called team control, would Zegras be willing to sit?

Hot take: Zegras never signs another deal with the Ducks. He's traded before this contract is up or when it concludes.

Nah, I am thinking the same thing. Feels very Tkachuk-esque.

Didn't Anaheim take Carlson because they have Zegras I think he is in the long term plans.

The Carlson pick is going to bite them in the ass.

How so?
I think there intent is to run Carlsson/MacTavish up the middle and then Zegras on the wing.

I would have taken Fantilli but it's damn close. Carlsson has a better feel for the game, whereas Fantilli has better physical attributes.

I think they felt like Zegras and Fantili are similar players.

Carlson isn't terrible but you don't pass on the type of offensive ability Fantili brings.

You’re forgetting Terry. I assume Carlsson will remain a winger.

Default Ducks and Zegras agree to Terms (3 years, $5.75mil AAV)

Maybe a bit of of an unpopular opinion here, but I think Zegras is one of the most overrated young players in the league today.

Insane hands and good offensive instincts, but very one dimensional. Even then his offense isn’t even that impactful. He really needs to refine his game to become a competent second line center or else he will continue to just be used as a specialist.

I remember Julian McKenzie at the start of last season on a podcast discussing Bedard landing spots and he said San Jose would be amazing so we could watch Bedard and Zegras go head to head for years. I was shocked he thought that highly of Zegras. They aren’t even in the same stratosphere of player

If I'm his agent, I'm telling him so. He gains more by having the Tkachuk road to UFA than he loses by sitting short-term. And I think the Ducks knew it, which is why they caved and gave him a 3-year deal.
