Basically, the odds are heavily stacked against both Kerins and Nikolaev at this point. The chances of them becoming NHLers is low enough, but the chances of them becoming top 9 forwards in the NHL are basically nothing at this rate.
You never know though. We just so happen to have probably the best non-goaltender former ECHL-player in the league in Weegar.

It's actually pretty common for goalies like you said and less common, but still not that rare for defensemen. With forwards though, few make the jump from the ECHL to the NHL, and when they do, they are usually energy guys.
Still every once in a while, you get a Verhaeghe, Gourde, or Marchment.
