Eritrea is one of the most repressive dictatorships in the world (same guy in power for 30 years now), with with one of the worst human rights records in the world.
The government basically uses it's own population as slave labor for starters, as anyone between 18-50 is eligible for mandatory national service of indefinite length. Only a few religions are legal to practice at all, others are actively persecuted, imprisoned, tortured etc. I could go on, but basically it's really bad.
It's also a really isolated country, and poor. Comparisons are made to North Korea sometimes.

It was part of Ethiopia from the 50s to the early 90s. It's a small, poor country with a GDP comparable to Nunavut. Like Itse said, the government is extremely repressive and these clashes are between its supporters and its critics. I don't know why they seem to be happening so often recently though.

It makes me wonder why some of these asylum seekers are apparently supporters of the current dictator and the regime. Like, they support the guy who is basically making the country unlivable for them? Netanyahu had a good point when he said the if you are Eritrean and support the dictator, Israel cannot take their asylum requests seriously.

I was reminded of Eritrea a few seasons ago when it was noted that Oliver Kylington is half Eritrean.

I'm not going to pretend I know what that's about for a fact, but it's easy enough to speculate based on other countries.
First, conditioning / brainwashing. I've read some stuff claiming that despite having a single lifetime leader, it's more a one-party system rather than a cult of personality, but that doesn't really change the fact that when people grow up knowing only one thing, it can be hard to understand that options even exist or that you've been fed a bunch of BS your whole life.
Since Eritrea is super poor and isolated, meaning it's hard to leave, it's possible (PURE SPECULATION) that a disproportionate number of people leaving Eritrea are looking more for better living conditions than political asylum. (Even in dictatorships, not everyone gets persecuted equally. The most persecuted often find it impossible to leave.)
That way you'll have a big portion of Eritrean immigrants who think the problem is just that the country is super poor, not that there's something wrong with the government. If that's what you believe, then sending money back home to the government makes sense.
I can see how that would leave to fights breaking out. One group hates the oppressive government and sees the others as supporting a dictatorship. Other group sees a country in desperate need of financial support, and see the first group as people who would rather see Eritreans starve just because they don't like it's government.

Btw, AFAIK it's fairly unusual for immigrants to send money back to their government. Not sure if I've ever heard of that before? Usually people send it to their relatives.

You'd think it would be hard to #### up winning the human rights lottery and essentially getting a mulligan on life, but leave it up to these people to bungle that. Not enough impromptu bloodshed to feel quite at home I guess?
I don't know why resisting violence with all the potential consequences attached to it is difficult for any one with a sound mind, let alone there many people, all at once. In a shopping plaza.

It's literally, like, one of the highest-crime communities per police statistics: https://data.calgary.ca/Health-and-S...019-/hhjd-wzc2.
Not sure if the poster was being racist, but it's hardly offside to suggest Castleridge has a far higher-than average crime rate...when it does.

Maybe I'm reading that map wrong but it looks like Castleridge has about the same crime level as your hood. Falconridge is high though. Is that what you're thinking of?

Well, Castleridge has pretty much half the population of Lake Bonavista and more crime, so there's that. Per capita, it has twice the crime. The infographic does require some interpretation. Falconridge is definitely worse, though, with same population as LB and triple the crime.
NE has the highest crime. It's not racist to point that out, I don't think.

Woah settle down. You are literally the only person in this entire thread to mention racism or people of brown color. I was well aware of the nationality of those involved, as I even treated one of them.
It was a geographic socioeconomic statement of fact. Anybody who has worked a night at the PLC ER versus all the other hospital ER's in the city (Sheldon Chumir excluded) knows this in terms of what comes in.
Sounds like you are projecting here with some obvious virtue signaling. Save the eye rolls for when you look in the mirror.
