I voted Zary based on how good he looked at camp last year. If he's progressed, I'm sure he will stand out during this year's camp as well. Poirier was almost my pick. I think Morin will be a gamer but he is further down the road than Zary or Poirier.

I get it to a degree. Morin has a much more complete game in his draft year than Poirier did, and fewer question marks. For me, Poirier has really begun to answer most of the question marks and has progressed very well towards an NHL job. Morin will likely be close to what Poirier is now in 3 years without much development, and if he improves he could be even better.
I just like Poirier's offensive instincts. I think he can be a very good offensive defenseman in the NHL. Skill and creativity are sorely needed in the modern NHL.

Yeah, Poirier has been progressing solidly every year.

Re: Poirier & Wolf
Clearly the Flames need to draft more redheads in the later rounds. Being on the Flames makes redheads excel in their development.
Someone let management know.

The way I understood it is that Morin may have been a first rounder in a draft that wasn't as deep as this one. I voted Zary anyway, but I'm pretty intrigued by Morin.

Voted for Zary, I think once he's gone I'm into random voting territory.

Zary. Next is Morin. I like his overall game better than Poirier. But Poiriers offensive acumen isn't something to look over either.

Zary, I honestly thought he deserved an audition after his camp last year, was hoping the Flames would give him a look in the first few games of the regular season. He’s a fun player to watch and I think he can be a successful third line guy if his offence doesn’t translate to the NHL. But I see him as a strong second liner, and a fan favourite.

Tough one for me. I kind of wanted to say Morin, but I think the "shiny new toy" aspect was playing into a bit. Zary had a good rebound season, so went with him.

Why?
Morin put up better numbers in his draft year than Poirier did in D+1 or D+2.
Morin has at least (more, IMO) offensive skill than Poirier, with a more complete skill set, and a way higher hockey IQ.
Poirier has progressed tremendously, and has worked on many of his short-comings. But Morin, has top pairing potential, whereas Poirier more likely has offensive, 3rd-pairing potential.

Yes, Morin would have been a 1st rounder in most drafts, and some thought he would go in the 1st round in this one.

I tentatively voted Zary, but I'd like one of the defensemen to prove me wrong.

Poirier and Morin are somewhat similar prospects, but Poirier is further along in his development and has shown noticeable progression where it was needed, so for me, it's him. Another year from now, the two could easily flip in the rankings, as I think Morin does have better tools, and hopefully one of them will be a top pairing D and PP quarterback in the next 3-4 years.
I see Zary as likely a 2C, so slightly lower ceiling, with a somewhat muddled development curve as a result of injury. Either he or Morin could be next for me.

If Morin can continue to be a minute muching all situation top D it's an incredible pick, but to be fair Moncton has very subpar D outside of Morin
The one thing Poirier has done to be ahead of Morin for me is continuing to progress every year, and doing it in the AHL. Obviously Morin hasn't had that chance yet, but there's no guarantee he can progress as well as Poirier has
Nothing against either of them, they're undoubtedly our #1 and #2 D prospects. I just think Poirier has taken every step forward we could have hoped for, especially as a rookie in the AHL. Hopefully Morin can follow a similar path and be in the NHL conversation in the next 2-3 years

Scouts aren't rating Morin high because he is getting opportunities (by default), they rated him the best (or one of the best, depending on who) Canadian defenseman in the draft.
Yes, Poirier has progressed very well over the last 4 years. No question. But even with that, his upside is no where near where Morin's is.

It’s pretty nice to debate Morin/Poirier/Zary right now. The top 7 looks so good for Calgary. Need to have a prospect pool beyond 5 top prospects, so it’s nice to see the top 2 Calgary picks in the most recent draft being highly regarded around here.

Top 7:
Honzek/Pelletier - Zary - Coronato
Morin - Poirier
Wolf
I mean, we're not expecting any MacKinnons or Makars there, obviously, but that's a pretty sound group, covering all positions

He’s likely my 8th choice.
Followed by Solovyov. And I’m still thinking about Kerins and where he should be. Want to see him in the AHL again.
