I think your top Salary is crazy low. They are going to get 10-15% of your cap. When Iggy signed his contract with a 35 million cap it was 20% that first year.

You need to build a team scores 250-300 goals and without that premium talent it’s going to be tough. I like the concept of paying 2 players per line more money and the 3rd you cycle through lesser players hoping for chemistry.

So it’s more like 12.5% 9% 5% for the top line and you hope the entry level guys and other low cost 2nd contract guys come through. Same with the rest spend more on the Center less on the 3rd winger.

On D paying more for a true top pairing guy at the expense of the rest of the line up.

The other thing is just because you have these slots doesn’t mean you just fit the players you have or are available into these slots. Teams get themselves into trouble by slitting guys into salary slots above their ability.

So the question is if an owner like in Carolina can start making business like decisions instead of fanboy hobby decisions when it comes to players, their roles, and then their salaries will that have an impact on how the rest of the league conducts business?

A more rational approach to how players are evaluated and the salaries they deserve might help teams to stop from getting themselves in trouble.

While Carolina is very well managed they haven’t won anything yet . Superstars still win in this league and Carolina is short on them still

Perhaps they need to empty to cupboard and keep up in the arms race at some point

Trying to assign cap amounts by player position is pointless, and the wrong way to go about it - you can't control who your best players are going to be, you never know who is going to blossom. You have to pay the guys that earn it.

The way to manage the cap is to ensure that you have a steady stream of ELCs rising up in the system. The more young, cheap guys you have, the better.

And obviously you want to avoid the horrible contracts, but they aren't always as easy to predict.

Assigning a % of cap to a position is too hard because you could be paying someone a % who doesn't deserve it.

Ideally you would want to spend the most down the middle and on your top 4 and supplant the team with some good support players and a few good ELC each year.

I think the people who are saying that assigning % of cap is not a great idea is not totally wrong but I dont see why the proposed OP method is a starting point and then you can tweak based on what your roster quality is. For example, if your #2 is more of a #3 then you can reduce for that position and so on and so forth. Ultimately, it comes down to the GM and his handle on what their players are ranked as in the league.

The way the league is going seems to be over pay young players and hope they exceed their contracts and pay depth less

I would be surprised if most franchises didn't have some type of ranking of this type as a guide. They always talk about projections of the cap and contracts, which this formula would be one part of the analysis.

The difficulty comes when your line-up does not match. If your best player is a right winger but he happens to be the best in the league, then you pay more for that position and perhaps are alright with less elsewhere.
