At some point, there has to be a declaration of proper martial law, this isn't going to burn itself out before France is burned down.
I have no idea if this is true or not but seems wildly unlikely. France has had like 3 riots already this year.

This is a good opportunity to recommend again Athena on Netflix, an incredibly tense French action film from last year I believe. It deals with pretty much exactly this situation - a riot takes place in an apartment block complex after a North African teen is shot and killed by police. Leading the riot is one of the teen's brothers and trying to stop it is another brother who's a cop. The first twenty minutes or so is the most stunning one shot I've ever seen, no CGI, no hidden cuts, all filmed for real which seems unbelievable when watching it (there's a behind the scenes feature also on Netflix). Even if you don't get around to watching the film, I'd highly recommend watching that amazing scene at least. The film is great though the final scene probably should have been excised as it undoes a lot.

It's hard right now to filter out which are real videos of current events and which are being misrepresented, but even among the less crazy videos there are ones like what you've described that certainly seem authentic and ones from legitimate sources are pretty scary too.

The only way to stop a French riot is with a French strike. It's like dividing by zero.

Technically in France the Riots dont 'end' per se, they simply transition into the next one.

Sadly, this is something that a lot of people saw coming simply because of socio-economic mix in France.

They have a very Liberal immigration policy which has resulted in a lot of East Indian and African immigrants, unfortunately they also have an ageing population and a significant unemployment problem.

So you have all of these different cultures and religions coming in and mixing, but theres little to no work, meaning life is hard and they are dependent on the State and now you've got a huge generation of multi-cultural youth who are disaffected and idle.

Not a good mix.

Right, but that indicator is typically a minimum of 6 months out of date and the last times France has had 'historically low unemployment' it led right up to some bad recessions, but also you have to look at 'youth unemployment' and combine that with the already high cost of living in France in conjunction with impending hikes on utility rates, increases in inflation and high interest rates?

The storm is coming and these people are already feeling it.

Sounds too much like "economic anxiety" being the cause of Trump's rise in the US to me.

France - similar to Quebec here - is very protective of their culture/not nearly as open to other cultures as Canada.

I wish we’d riot more in North America when the cops murdered someone. When a minority is executed at a traffic stop it should cause some uproar.

Say what you will about the French and Americans, and I dont even think it needs to be a minority, although thats just statistically more likely, but I more or less agree.

Sometimes I think authorities need to be reminded about whom they serve from time to time.

I think back to the Pandemic and BLM and the protests about Police abuse and the Police responded with harder and more severe abuse...on National TV. They DGAF. They just fired more tear gas and cracked more heads with nightsticks to be broadcast to the world on the evening news.

Consequences? What consequences?

The west has always been good at projecting and lecturing other nations about being too heavy-handed during civil unrest while forgetting what they do themselves to their own citizens in their own countries. Do as I say, not as I do.

I understand the reason for the riots. Injustice is going to reach a boiling point at some stage. But burning down your own community, grocery stores, pharmacies, and medical centres isn’t gonna help you. Burning down the store where your parent worked, and now is unemployed, is counterproductive.

I am planning on spending a year in France with my family in 2025-26. My wife and I have a deferred leave plan with our employers and I thought it would be a great experience for my kids. The kids would enroll in school there, really learn French (currently in French immersion), and we would use it as a base to travel around Europe. However, all these riots and the challenges they seem to have with migrants are making me rethink my plan.

I've never been there so I have no idea, but it feels like there are a ton of much better options and safer/more stable countries than France to live in. And given French is so widely spoken in Europe, I'm thinking you could have your kids really learn French somewhere else too. Doesn't need to be in France.

If you and your wife are white, I think you'll be fine though anywhere in Europe, including France.

Damn the 5th Republic only had 5 years to go to take the record for the longest French Republic.

3 most stable French governments ever:

1. Old Monarchy
2. 3rd Republic that lost to the Nazis
3. Current French government

Lol. Yes they have made it an art as they do. But it’s not exclusively French.
