Is two days of negotiation time with an old guy worth a 7th rounder?

Why would he sign there though? I guess they could move him at the deadline

I'm surprised Looch isn't in Chicago, yet.

I think they don't want to lose him to Treliving.

Tampa Bay had fewer points than Seattle.

4m more than I thought he would get but I guess retaining 50% of that at the deadline will still be attractive for contenders looking to add him.

The Hawks need to get to the cap floor and they want to surround Bedard with veterans. This is a no brainer for both sides.

And a head scratcher for the other 31 teams in the league.
There is no alternate universe where a 38 year old Corey Perry is worth $4M.
Even Arizona is scratching their heads/pissed off they weren't asked to retain salary on this contract.

Is Perry worth $4 million a year? Not even close. But he’s a great guy to have in the locker room for Bedard, the guy has won it all. Chicago probably won’t come close to spending to the cap, so it’s irrelevant.
We watched what Edmonton did for a decade in giving the kids the keys. It didn’t work until they lucked their way into getting McDavid. You have to surround young guys like Bedard with veterans who have been there before. Chicago isn’t winning anytime soon, would you rather spend $4 million on a guy with a boat load of experience like Perry, or two guys making $2 million that are basically tweeners at the NHL level? You have to spend the money regardless so you might as well bring in some leadership

What Chicago is doing right now reminds me of when the Penguins first drafted Crosby. They surrounded Crosby with vets. They didn't make the playoffs, but Crosby scored a hundred points that year.
Bedard is exciting to have entering into the league. I'll be following the hawks more this year. In my opinion, they're more exciting than the flames, and I've been a flames fan my whole life.

Get Bedard some good vets to play with, sell vets at the deadline.
Your franchise player gets good experience for 55-60 games with a top vet, while you acquire more picks at the deadline as you continue to re-stock the prospect cupboard.
Solid work done here.

Chicago’s signings say the complete opposite of trying to make the playoffs.
They have no interest in giving up first round picks and signing players to 8 year contracts who will be over 30 before they actually are ready to contend.
They will weaponize their cap space.

I think it's funny that Richardson felt he needed to trade anything for the rights of a guy who he is going to overpay by $3MM. I am pretty confident in suggesting that no one would have offered Corey Perry $4MM a year.

They don't care, they need to get to the cap floor anyway and can recoup the assets at the deadline. Makes easy sense.
