Such an unceremonious dumping of Bailey, who's played his entire career with the Islanders and is their 7th all time scorer. Yes, the same team that had those elite players in the early 80's like Trottier, Bossy, Gillies, and Potvin, he's 7th on their all time scoring list, playing over 1000 games.
I get that it's a capped league and everyone is trying to find room, but it seems that he deserved a little better send off after the time and contribution he put into that franchise. Being traded for "future considerations" is pretty rough.

This 34 year old GM sure has convinced the world that cap space is pretty important. He also seems pretty, pretty, pretty good.
I wonder if NHL GMs are over valuing cap space?

I was saying this at the trade deadline when Minnesota was brokering deals for draft picks and getting 4ths and 5ths. They should have got more.
It's pretty clear GM's league wide still are under valuing cap space. This off season is the first time we are seeing teams desperate to move guys get hosed and selling teams right now are losing trades.
Hall for nothing
Ry Jo 50% RS for nothing
Hayes 50% RS for 6th
Toffoli for Sharangovich and 3rd
Bailey and 2nd for nothing
Chicago is already looking stacked adding Bailey, Hall, Foligno, Bedard and Moore.

Totally. I can't believe they got a 2nd in addition to Bailey. The more I think about it the less I like this for the Islanders. They must really have something in mind for that cap space because that is a bit of a crazy payment.

Can we hire a random 34 year guy on the street with 4/10 hockey knowledge as our GM?

Add Yamamoto and Klostin to the list for nothing.
I have a feeling we will still have Backlund by the start of the season as he might not get us much.

Wouldn't see why not, I'd presume it'd only be Chicago that couldn't re-sign him.

Calgary bought him out.
I thought that you couldn't trade a player, have the other team buy him out and then resign him.
Or am I confusing buyouts with retained salary trades? Like the DeAngelo thing from last week.

Yeah, I can't see how that wouldn't be cap circumvention.

I think they'd need to let some time play out and argue that they were the only team willing to sign him.
But Bailey didn't play a single minute in the playoffs, though it looks like he was healthy since he played in the final reg season game...

Then using the cap space to sign Kadri was the cherry on top.

So if you're the Flames trade Toffoli for a couple picks. Then take Bailey and get another pick. And then you can still maintain the delusion of being competitive but you have 3 extra picks.
