A true rebuild trade would’ve seen the Flames trade Tyler Toffoli for picks and prospects. Yegor Sharangovich is not a prospect. He is a 25-year-old roster player, and he will likely start in the middle-6. The 3rd round pick could assist a rebuild, of course, but given the likelihood of a 3rd rounder working out, the majority of the return is likely a roster player.

Can we rename this thread to "Just Kidding: Let's Make More Justifications For Mediocrity!"?

The real damage here is fans will continue to cling on to this false hope and will just lose interest in the Flames. It won't get better, just more of the same.

This is one deal, a 31 year old pending UFA who didn’t want to be here. We did get a 3rd round pick, Yegor is younger and faster and cost controlled. He may get 30 playing in our top 6 and you might deal him for more picks in a few years or he’s a key depth play for us in 4 years when he’s only 29.

Not sure how this screams we are better next year and it’s probably the first of many deals over the next 6 months.

Some people just like cheering for the Flames because watching hockey is fun and they’re the home team.

Fun. Try getting a little from your entertainment once in a while. It’s a hell of a drug.

Sure and if all the other deals goes the rebuild route then this deal then great, I will acknowledge that, but with everything they have been saying, everything we have seen from this organization in the past and the rumours of them trying to re-sign guys we have no business re-signing it is hard not to see this as a sign that the bogus re-tool is the way they will try to go.

In a redraft of 2018 draft class based on points Yegor is 8th and 4th in goals, he is essentially a first rounder. We got a first and third for a 31 year old pending UFA that requested a trade openly. The chances of a 1st round pick in the 25-32 range getting 53 goals after 200 games is very low.

Toffoli was never getting us a 1st round pick in the 2023 draft.

Yeah, I'm weird. I want the team I support to actually build towards something resembling success instead of just trying to placate me with "stay the course" moves that lead the franchise nowhere.

But this is it in a nutshell: There are a lot of Flames fans like you who will take mediocrity and like it. Well, until they get bored and move on.

I think you're wrong. I think they see him more as a Duclair type to play with Huberdeau. Conroy talked about his size and his shot.

You’re saying you disagree with the 2nd or 3rd line part?

Too early to call it a no rebuild situation in my eyes. Toffoli was arguably the weakest asset out of the 4 rumoured names that want out of here, let's see how the other three's potential trades workout first.

Although, the Lindholm news on him having no deadline to decide is troublesome.

Yes I think they will play him on the first line with Huberdeau. Well I guess that could be second line. So maybe I disagree with 3rd line.

Fallacious reasoning. You still don't have a vote.

You can choose not to give Murray your money. That - in and of itself - will not get him to rebuild. And it probably won't even if 5,000 people did so....or maybe even 19,000. If so...he'd just move the team. So...no rebuild that way either.

Okay, I could see 2nd line. I’m not actually disappointed about Sharangovich. I’m disappointed that they traded Toffoli mostly for a roster player because that suggests they’re still focused on the present rather than the future.

Thats understandable. Looks like another rebuild on the fly scenario that will lead to what it is now.

Toffoli was never getting us a 1st round pick in the 2023 draft.
To add to your point - Sign Yegor for 4yrs at 3m AAV and have him score 25g 50pts this season and we've got an asset that is in their prime and cost controlled for three more seasons.

I don't think anyone was offering 1st or 2nds for Toffoli.
I'll want to see what happens with the other players before we know if this is a rebuild. I suspect we are still seeing a rebuild and this was just the most on offer for TT.

I haven’t given the Flames money for well over a decade. I wish I had a vote on whether my tax dollars pay for a new arena.

Yup I think our only chance of a 1st in this draft is Hanafin or Lindholm, I’m still hopeful but if one brings a 2024 1st rounder I’ll also take that as well, this draft appears very deep and it’s one day away, trading a 1st now is a slap in the face to your scouting team so it better be for someone more sexy than Toffoli.
