Good to see him win. Unlike many others on the board, I’d love for the Flames to resign him and have him as a career Flame, if he is open to that.

Just a little bit more about Mikael’s work with Parachute for Pets - when his dog died, he and his wife started Lily’s Legacy with Parachutes for Pets to provide support for families who are bringing in foster kids who have pets so that they can keep their pets. It’s pretty awesome that a guy who lost a pet can ask himself, “how can I help kids stay with their pets when they need them the most?”
Quite a guy. I hope we can keep him.

Yup. Say what you want about the on-ice product. But when it comes to being part of the community and leading by example, the Flames are at the top of the NHL heap.
Well deserved award. Kind of torn if I want to see Backlund stay or try to win a cup elsewhere. Either way I'm at peace with what his decision. He's earned the right to retire a Flames or to chase his cup and nobody can fault either decision.

is it normal for non-Captains to win this?

Very much deserved. Top guy (with the support of his wife too!).
Pretty sure I read/heard that he often drops food from the dome off at shelters nearby. Obviously it's a little thing but makes a difference.

Pure class.
If Backlund is traded, he'll immediately become the player I want to see win the cup the most, if not the Flames. Unless he gets traded to Edmonton of course.

The previous five winners, including Backlund, haven't been captains

I still can’t believe the team had no captain last year. What is the possible rationale for that?

Yeah. It looks like the last captain to win was Henrik Sedin in 2018, but he shared it with Daniel that year.

Quality people like Backlund are hard to find. Proud that he’s been a Flame and such a valuable member in the community. Reminds me a lot of Jarome.
Won’t fault him for wanting to chase a cup but would also be cool to see him hit 1,000 games with Calgary and be the next captain.
Hockey talk aside, congrats to a well deserving player.

#### me. As if I didn't need another reason to love Mr. Backlund.
I lost my dog recently, and this hits me deep.
One of the greatest Flames players ever. He's in my top 10.

Should really have been captain after Gio left. I'm glad he's getting this recognition while it must feel like everything is up in the air for him this off-season. Whatever happens, he has been a great Calgary Flame.

Congrats to Backs on a much deserved award! I really hope he re-signs, but if he wants to go elsewhere to try and win a Cup next year, I'm ok with that too. The guy is a hell of a player and a quality human being. He would definitely be missed.

I think the real question we should be asking ourselves is who are these people throwing pets out of airplanes in the first place?
Regardless of whether they do or dont have parachutes?
