Well, what the Caps are really trying to do is get Washington DC to pay for upgrades to the Capital One Arena.

It's weird that Sportsnet framed this as the team looking to move, when the original story makes it clear this is Monumental just playing the game the way it's always played (although, maybe not so weird since it's Rogers).

Will admit I didn't know exactly where Virginia was in relation to D.C. I always associate Virginia with being more "Southern". Did not realize that it would only be a few miles from D.C. This basically changes nothing for DC fans, but I could see it attracting more fans from Virginia and creating a rivalry with Carolina.

Yes - its a money grab. Washington teams are in one of the prime spots to get government money because outside of the county/city money - they can get Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia to battle over the stadium and still be in the DC metro.

Amazon HQ is 5 miles from capital One arena, this would be the equivalent of the Flames moving to Southland Drive.

I lived in Northern Viginia for 2 years. It's basically DC. A lot of the US capital stuff is also there. The Pentagon, FBI headquarters, Arlington national cemetery, etc. Pretty much all of the region are Caps fans anyways, this is exactly like the Flames putting an arena on Glenmore and McLeod, instead of downtown.

FBI HQ is in DC proper, at the J. Edgar Hoover Building at the corner of Pennsylvania and 10th Street. But yeah, "Northern Virginia" is just "DC 'burbs across the Potomac".

The Capitals originally played at the Capital Centre, which was in the Maryland 'burbs (just) outside the eastern fringes of the Beltway. The reason why Abe Pollin built the Capital One Arena née MCI Center in Chinatown in the first place was because the suburban location of the Capital Centre—like all suburban arenas—was difficult to get to for 7:00 pm game starts on a weeknight. The location is now right by the Downtown Largo metro station at the end of the blue and silver lines, but that didn't open until after the Capital Centre was demolished and replaced by a shopping mall.

This is purely a play by Ted Leonsis to get the DC government to chip in for upgrades to the existing arena, and nothing more. I'd be very surprised if anything ever came of this "rumour". The Capital One Arena location is right on top of the Gallery Place metro station, making it one of the easiest places to get to in the entire DC metropolitan area. They'd be insane to move to "NoVa". Leonsis makes a crap load more money downtown than Pollin ever did in the suburbs.
