I think people are being hard on Kotkaniemi because of his previous seasons prior to last year. He just put up 0.5 pt in the playoffs across 15 games, had a solid full 82 game reg season and is still extremely young and signed to a deal that is still good value if he remains at his 45 point production. He hasn’t been playing his natural position in Carolina as much as he’d probably like and to call him a borderline cap dump is absurd. I do agree there isn’t a ‘high-end’ piece here in this trade proposal but the Flames aren’t exactly dealing from a position of strength and there are 31 other teams in the league looking to broker deals so it’s going to be tricky ti get deals done here.

How close is that ? Which team would need to add?
Some good young pieces coming back and if the flames could figure out Jesse in any way this could be like a Lindy/Hanifin 2.0 trade with the added bonus of Drury and 30 OA.
|
I don't like that return for Lindholm alone let alone for all 3.
Not saying they would offer that to us for Lindholm but Drury is zero interest to me, a run of the mill player you can get anywhere. Kotkaniemi, meh not worth taking the risk on as a key player in a deal for Lindholm.

If its Florida the cost has to be very high as they are getting players familiar with each other.

Retain salary then to make the trade with Colorado work! What's the problem there. I know Flames ownership doesn't encourage it, but seemingly every team uses it as a strategy. So if there's going to be a rebuild/retooling they better get used to it.

I think Buffalo would be a perfect trade partner. I could see them wanting both Hanifin and vladar. I’m just not sure what type of return would be. I’m not convinced that flames will make a complete “futures” trade . They should , but I have my doubts .Mittelstadt and one of the many promising prospects ready to jump to nhl? Just spitballing

Doesn't kotkaniemi's contact mean that he's due 7m or something next time around, or have I mis-remembered that? Do not really want.

Carolina seems like they would have been a good fit last year but the players that we should want, Necas and Jarvis, both had good years and might have put themselves into the unavailable category. Now the pieces they have left being unappealing, with the draft pick being so late as well, means that they don't really fit. Hopefully we could somehow get Jarvis in a Lindholm deal, but I feel that is overly hopeful/homerish.
Buffalo does have pieces that seem to fit better with Krebs, the higher pick and I guess Rosen (meh).

All Calgary players want to move to Florida eventually. This is natural.

That was his old contract. He’s getting just under 5 until like 2030 now and will be a UFA at the end.

Any trade with Florida will have to have a pick coming back and since it's so far out maybe get creative and get some pick swap options for later years as well. Plus Lundell and Duclair.
Buffalo would have to do 13 and a prospect for Hanifin.
Backlund to Colorado makes sense and we can retain salary for 1 year not a big deal but again we want a 1st maybe a roster player and Newhook and I don't think Newhook is going to be anything special.
Toffoli to Carolina for a 2024 1st a 2023 2nd and maybe a prospect.

What about a trade with NY around Kakko or Laf? Any fit there?

I think I’d rather 13 and maybe Rosen over Lundell.
While Lundell is NHL ready, taking the pick gives us a shot at an impact forward or D man. Lundell’s game is pretty pedestrian, while a good 2/3 I think I’d personally take the pick + prospect.

I remember Brind’Amour saying something along the lines that he wasn’t surprised to see Lindholm doing what he did in 2021/22.
He does like the player.

Lol Lundell is 21 and he is not pedestrian.
He had a tough year last year but so did everyone else on that team except Tkachuk and Verghe
I doubt Florida would trade him
Rosen is not in the same tier as him
I doubt you would get some one as good as him at 13th without risk

I feel like the key for the team is to retain salary to entice teams to trade their 2023 draft picks.
It’s supposedly a deep draft, so if there was a year to start a rebuild, this would be it. Retain 50% on Backlund, Lindholm, and Toffoli as I think Hanifin has the ability to get a 1st without retaining. Then bring up the young players on the Wranglers and hopefully 2 or 3 of those 1st rounders pan out.

Haha. Well if Buffalo is offering the 13th overall pick I don't think there should be any question that Conroy should take that, I don't think Florida will be able to beat that in any realistic way.
