Doan had left his post in the AZ front office last year after he didn't get a GM or AGM position. I wouldn't read too far into this.

Or maybe Brad is sabotaging the talent in Arizona so there's no Arizona left for Auston Matthews to bolt to. 3D-chess GMing.

The Leafs situation is so interesting. Everyone in the media locally claims Matthews plays everything close to the chest at every moment, so you can't really tell if he likes Toronto or not. They're right in that regard, but to me he seems to like the celebrity life and being seem in sunny climates. I really think signing him could go either way. Either the Leafs pay him big money in an extension ($15M+, which I think would be a big mistake as it's too much), or he walks and goes to one of the southern teams. I could see a fit on any of the South West teams (LV, LA, Anaheim, San Jose). The latter three would want to make that step up at some point in a year or so, so it definitely makes sense. I could also see Florida doing what they can to make it happen as well. Doan's hire is definitely to do everything for him to stay at the right price. I don't see him as taking an extreme discount under $14M, wherever he goes though.

Kind of OT, but is Sheldon Keefe safe at this point? When Treliving was first hired by the Leafs, it didn't sound certain. But given the time that has gone by, has it been confirmed that he is the guy at least for next season? Part of me thought he might try to poach Mitch Love.
It would seem unfair to string him along until all the teams looking for coaches start finalizing who they hire.

I don't think he's going anywhere. I'd actually argue Treliving had a notion not to dump him unless something odd came from their conversation. Sure he had a great regular season record, and that says a lot, but putting that aside, if Matthews respects him, and most of the cast does, if you remove him you're taking a risk in pissing off too many of the players with too many changes. I'm starting to believe Treliving is going to give the "big 4" a chance with a different supporting cast. Then if they falter, next off-season or the TDL is where he'll make his big play. I truly believe the organization is scared of pissing the big guys off until they sign.

Probably doesn't want to burn through his coach hires too fast - that has to be a knock on his record from here, probably wants to be careful.

Does any league put more ex players in the front office than the NHL?

BA for the Coyotes has done well for them. Good on Doan for getting an opportunity to learn from Brad. It's a great hire for Toronto.

Why?
I mean, I don't like him either but I don't know why.
