I am very curious what the issue was/is because I love the player and I wish him the best, but I'll respect his privacy.

The Flames are also competing with 31 other teams for players, not just on the ice, we are becoming or always have been the Edmonton/Winnipeg destination of choice, where no trade clauses are only there for us.
If someone has a choice between $100k per year and they know there are other factors such as "this team will take care of me through thick and thin" it would be nice to be one of the good ones, because we sure are not a desirable place to play when you have a tonne of money and opportunity to go most anywhere.
Edwards is a notorious and proven cheap bastard, I heard from multiple places that Gaudreau was the only player at the previous all-star game to not get a PJ to and from the game and it didn't set well. Yes that is petty but if you have two choices its pretty simple. I would and have taken less money for a better run place that treats employees better.
There could be a million things going on, a black kid growing up in the whitest place on earth in the whitest old school sport on earth, maybe there is some trauma there. Who knows. Maybe his sister has cancer and only has 6 months to live who knows.
Obviously it has to come to a head and it will. Hell, I am deeply curious what it is, but I certainly don't have any sort of right to know as some loser fan typing on a message board. Its between the employer and employee.

This is one area you have to give the organization credit. We still have no idea what happened with Kylington this season and there weren't even any solid rumors.

Him and Huberdeau followed each other on Instagram recently.
Hopefully he’s still in touch with the team and is ready to come back next season.

I'm actually not sure TBH.
I just assumed he never reported to training camp so he wouldn't get paid, and it wasn't an injury.
Alexander Texier wasn't paid by Columbus...but he was removed from the roster.

At this point, I do not even count on him being a Flame next year, cannot rely on what-ifs. He took a year off, hope he is ok personally at a human level. A year off for a player is very detrimental at a hockey level. So even if he is back, what version are we getting? Very bizarre situation to say "he is not starting training camp" to be where we are.

Well, you can't teach that kind of skating and I assume it doesn't just leave you after a year of not skating much.
Certainly it will take some time to get his game legs back but IMO he was our best defenseman alongside Tanev last year

Players have year long injuries all the time that take them away from the gym and the ability to skate all together. I think people are really overestimating just how difficult it would be for him to find his form again.
I think we will see him back next, and hopefully with a clear state of mind, he can take an even larger step forward! He has a very dynamic skillset that this team sorely lacked this year.
Most importantly let's hope that whatever issues he is going through can be resolved for his sake.

LTIR only matters if you are exceeding the cap, which we weren't. It would also mean you don't accrue any cap space so it's better to avoid it if possible.

Texier sounds like a particularly unique situation, where he was granted the ability to sign a deal to play in Europe (which seems like a reasonable solution where he can stay in shape closer to home in a lower pressure more supportive environment)
Drouin seems like it might be a more relevant comp; not sure if he was paid or not.
Who knows how things play out next season, but I wouldn't be surprised if he re-ups for 1 yr on a cheaper deal, maybe even this summer.

That’s what I thought. I remember Treliving trying to LTIR him so they could use his cap space. Pretty sure he was told no.

Dude has been a pro hockey player since he was 16.
Assuming he comes back, he’ll probably be a bit touch-and-go for his first few months. An AHL conditioning stint may even be worth considering.
But he’s not just going to forget how to play hockey.
I hope he’s doing well, and hope we get to see him play in a Flames jersey again soon.

If a player semi-retires for a year like this, there should be some benefits coming back to the org.
Salary does not count against the cap. They retain his rights for an extra year. Etc.
Also, I wish the organization was as good at managing a roster and coaching hires as they were at keeping secrets. At least they are good at something.

Sounds like some kind of legal issue which might have prevented him from entering Canada and/or the US.
