If you remember last summer Gaudreau signed elsewhere and Tkachuk asked out. So I assume he told is agent he wouldn’t want to be around for a rebuild. When they chose not to rebuild he stayed.

This is just noise after a bad season. It’s not meaningful at all.

I disagree that it makes you wonder if he is around next year

It is interesting to hear this.... If they had traded Tkachuck for Picks and Prospects and traded Backlund and another piece or two for the same that would have been quite the quick little rebuild. Likely a much better pick this season too.

If winning a Cup is important to him, I wouldn't blame him at all for making a trade request or at least considering one.

He's been a great soldier here for a long time but he's getting into his mid-late 30's, if he's still open to it I think the Flames should pull the trigger. Love Backs, but give him a chance to play for a contender and get some assets back. But the C on someone who will be here long-term, my choice is Andersson at this point.

So much for Backlund being a potential flame lifer

Heard this last summer from the same source that told me about the details of the Toffoli trade before it happened. Take that for what you will, but I tend to believe this is accurate and I believe it's part of why they haven't named him captain.

It just shows that Backlund has a desire to win the cup before he retires. So many keep saying he is a lifer and will sign for less because he wants to be here no matter what. For me this shows he probably will try to maximize his next contract and might take a discount from a team that has a chance. He's not just an automatic to re-sign because he does charity work in the city.

If Backs wants to still maybe go, facilitate that trade immediately. This year he proved how valuable he is. Sell high.

It actually speaks to his character that he would ask for a trade instead of being a lifer here he wants to win, we need more guys like that.

Backlund has been great and I am surprised he asked out, but it wouldn't be crazy to make a move. I think most thought his current contract would age badly by this point, but he has been full value. The next one could get ugly though. Would be interesting to hear what he expects in the next deal.

I doubt it was "wants to win" (if that means get a Cup) so much as "with two years on the contract left not in the mood for a fire sale rebuild around me". Not good for the last contract either.

Cup chasing is a fools game. Ask Jarome.

I remember seeing a tweet from a random guy last year saying Backs requested a trade and most of us wrote it off as BS. Guess he was right

You can't pick cup winners but you can go to a more consistent franchise that put themselves in a position to win that list was probably small but thats what I meant.

Not saying it wasn't, but even Leslie is mentioning it as a second-hand rumor.

It could still be BS, I guess.

If anything Jarome should have kept cup chasing.

His moves to Pittsburgh and Boston were fine.

It was when he stopped cup chasing and went to the Avalanche that was a mistake. Sometimes I forget he went to Colorado in 14-15 and they missed the playoffs and the Flames made it.

I think theres a chance he wants out agan with how disfunctional the team is. I dont see this team being a cup contender any time soon. He might want to pull the plug again after seeing how this played out.

They weren't good if the goal was a cup. Because he didn't get one. He's not the only one who tried that and failed. It's just too luck oriented.

I remember that as well some guy named Moe who heavily implied through the free agent negotiating period that the Flames would get Gaudreau signed so when that didn’t happen and he posted the Bscklund trade rumor most people called BS.

Gaudreau was all but signed before he took that car ride according to Frank so maybe this redeems the insider knowledge “Moe” had

If he wanted out last summer I'm not sure if what happened this season will have changed his mind or enticed him to stay. Especially with many other core pieces also up for new contracts after next year.

Who knows, maybe he now wants to wear flip flops to the rink every day.

I agree that he probably changed his mind after he saw Tre's moves to load up the team again. To me, this guy is still captain material.

Mikael Backlund was one of the first to reach out to newly signed Flame Matt Coronato.

A well-respected leader in the locker-room, Backlund quickly messaged the 2021 first-rounder once it was announced that he had inked his three-year entry-level contract Sunday.

The news had everyone fired up.

"Its exciting times for him for sure," Backlund said Monday after practice. "For us, it's exciting, too, for our organization having high picks coming in here and getting him signed. It'll be exciting to see him.

"It'll be fun to see him, exciting to skate with him. I don't know what the plan with games and all that but I'm sure he'll get to play and it'll be fun to have him in the lineup.

"It's special. A lot of nerves. Exchanged a couple texts with him yesterday and he said he was excited to come. When he gets here, we'll make it as comfortable as possible for him to make him feel welcome at home and a part of this group."
