I picture Treliving's meeting with other GMs go something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga5X6WnC8Qo&t=485s
Just subsitute "lawyer" for GM.

And it's not like "Tear it down" can't just happen at the draft or in the summer.

Alright, trade deadline complete.
Well put me in the “hope these losers lose every single game left this season” camp.

Guys like Toffoli and Tanev would have more value now than they would as UFAs.
Plus, they'd be trading high for both of them. A rarity for this franchise. And this is a better draft, especially in the first round.
Everyone expected the Flames to do what they did today. But some had hope for something better.
With that said, knowing the Flames, they will be contenders next year while many people are on their UFA year.

The Flames actually had more activity today than I thought they would.

Cue the "we were in a lot of trades. We had a lot of discussions, but ultimately price didn't make sense" BS from Tre

again, I just don't understand this argument. It's not like teams have been shelling out assets for players with another year on their deal ... Nashville got a 2nd each for Niederreiter and Granlund. That's not a whole lot.
In the summer, you can give them permission to talk contract with another team, which might max out the value. I highly doubt you could get more for Toffoli or Hanifin now than in the summer.

Completely different. Granlund is not cap efficient. Toffoli is.
Cap efficiency provides even more value when there is term remaining.

Yeah I agree.
My point is that the dumbest things the flames could have done today is a half-teardown where they trade a guy like Backlund or Lindholm. They didn't do that.
The correct choice is to keep the team together until they make a decision that they're leaving "win now" mode. And at that point, you tear it down hard and fast.
What the Flames did today wasn't dumb. It makes a lot of sense. If they don't have a definitive answer as to why the season was a failure - and I don't think any of us do - then being patient until you have the correct answer is the right thing to do.

He cannot be any worse than Treliving who will go down as the worst asset manager, extension negotiator and trade maker that this team has ever had.
