The must want to take advantage of having Petterson and Hughes on the books. Be bad for this season, get a top 10 pick, and try to rebound for next season.

They likely don't have the patience for a rebuild.

Seems like a low ceiling type of move.

Hronek is a good piece and is what Vancouver needs - but moving that Islander pick now is a bit bonkers IMO.

I don't get this at all, Hronek only signed through next year at 4.4 then RFA likely to get a raise, the canucks wont be competing by the end of his current contract and the player will be 27.

Wouldnt the draft picks fall more in line with their compete window/rebuild.

Meanwhile detroit SHOULD be competitive in the coming years wouldnt Hronek be a piece you want in your core? Puck moving scoring dman?

So confused

As CZ said, they are hoping to finish 14-17th in the league next year.

Reminds me of a team I know.

NYI is effectively 1pt out of the playoffs right now, but 7th-12th is very close.

Also interesting that 1st-6th in the East all have higher pts% than anybody in the West.

Hronek will be up for a raise on his $5.5 million ($4.4 cap hit) next offseason. Maybe the Wings didn't like the idea of paying him more than that.

I'd speculate at a Red Wings Flames blockbuster, but it would just be laughed at.

Islanders are pretenders. To give up that pick is nuts. Vancouver is lost.

Would I have traded Hanifin for this package? Those are going to be two great picks, especially with the small possibility of an unprotected 2024 1st if the Isles fall apart.

I’m not sure. I feel like I would have wanted one more decent piece but as a core to a deal it’s not bad.
