That looks wild. So wild my "fake" or "photo from another event" siren is wailing.
Yeah I know, you're right... I sourced it from reddit and read through a lot of comments without people screaming fake and that's where my due diligence ended.
To be fair, there are a lot of other apocalyptic looking photos of it in articles and on twitter:
For what is Chernobyl 2.0, there is barely any coverage from the mainstream media
Chernobyl 2.0 is quite the hyperbole. Two sides of the same coin. Recent developments are much more likely to hurt Democrats then Republicans due to recent actions.
Reporting on the derailment directly undermines recent Biden rail strike actions. Even though it was certainly not responsible for the derailment, it is bad optics. Meanwhile MSNBC is busy reporting on these hard hitting top page issues while largely shifting blame on local responders for the poor derailment response. There are some articles, but few and far between for such a disaster.
"In sex trafficking probe, Matt Gaetz won’t face federal charges"
"Nikki Haley kicks off 2024 run with pastor who claimed Holocaust was divine plan from God"
"If Trump throws an online tantrum today, this lawyer is likely why"
"John Bolton: There's no ‘serious case’ for Nikki Haley's candidacy"
This disaster and the blame (which should be attributed directly on Northern Suffolk) shouldn't be political yet it is, and why you have to resort to Twitter or Reddit or even Tik Tok for any info. Heck Canadian media has reported on it more than US MSM. The whole incident and subsequent handling, and poor reporting of it is a travesty
New York times also has breaking front news that Raquel Welsh has died. "Barely any coverage" does not mean there is no coverage.
I can find articles on MSNBC, CNN, Fox on derailments but they have to be dug versus front and center as top news stories.
I think the point is, that considering how large this disaster is, that the news reporting on this is not proportional to the level of disaster this truly is (compare to other recent events that made the news for example). I don't think that can really be argued.
Does anyone else hate the term "mainstream media" as much as I?
That and it's misuse.
Preach on sister. There's "the media", and then there's the cesspool of "social media". The media does their best to get facts right. Social media just tries to get stuff out right away. Trust the tradition sources of media and question anything that comes from social media.
Yikes. Vinyl chloride is nasty stuff. It is carcinogenic, migrates quickly through soil and groundwater (can even go through concrete), and persists for a long time once it gets into the groundwater table. Remediation is expensive and time consuming.
Yikes indeed. It also has the byproduct of Hydrochloric Acid, which readily bonds to water molecules when vinyl chloride is combusted.

I'd like to know more about what failure actually happened here before I start assigning blame. It's a ####ing tragedy no matter the cause, so let's figure out the safety of people and wildlife first before pointing fingers.
There's quite a bit that we do know about what happened.
We know enough to understand that this was very likely the result of cost-cutting measures by a company that has been infinitely more interested in profit maximization than public safety.
The problem with waiting too long to demand accountability is that once these stories leave the news cycle, public outrage begins to subside, and once weeks or months pass by, the public is busy focussing their attention to other, newer news stories, and the wrongdoers end up getting little to no punishment.

Just because it hurts the Democrats means it shouldn’t be reported on? There’s plenty of lives that could be ruined due to cancer and there is irreparable damage to the ecosystem. We probably won’t know its true death toll for decades. This should be front page centre
It looks like four of the chemicals being carried have been identified, including what is essentially mustard gas. How bad can the entire list be, if they didn't just publish everything at once?
It's also sad that the EPA are only warning people about the surface contaminants (wipe down your counters!) when the problem lies with the groundwater, and the cloud of combustion that they sent south to mess with the water table down there as well. A 'controlled' burn with no preparation was about the worst thing that they could have done.
