Not a fan of hosting summer type games. Too much infrastructure and too many less useful legacy facilities relative to winter games. I’m a winter games supporter though and hope we can get into a rotation.

That's not as big an issue with the Commonwealth Games as the Olympics. Under recent changes, there are only two sports that are required at the CG, athletics and swimming. Beyond that, the sports presented will be determined by the host city based on local popularity and venue availability.
For example, I'd guess if Alberta hosts in 2030, Cricket won't be on the schedule because we don't really have venues for it. Other than maybe some renovations to the stadiums in both cities, the venue costs would likely not be too outrageous and there wouldn't likely be any white elephants left over after the games.

Why are the security costs what they are? I refuse to believe until anyone provides any type of detail as to what and why security costs are what they are; that they are all that fundamental to the operation of the Olympics. At the end of the day it is a sporting event.
It's so weird how people are just like 'well this is what it costs' and literally nobody asks how / why?
If you're building new structures, do they all have to be "top of the line"?
I think the Calgary bid showed the non-top of the line facility version of a bid. Mostly refurbishments nothing new.
I agree with you on security. I would favour a good enough approach. No metal detectors, no performative security to decrease manpower an accept the risk of someone blowing up or shooting up a venue. I think most people after the fact of an event like that would say that the government should have done more. So the way people react to negative outcomes stops governments from marginally increasing risk level.
I’d rather be high jacked and blown up occasionally then go through airport security.

I guess this is cheaper to put on - but unless you have most of the facilities built I can't imagine this is even close to be profitable. Toronto hosted the Pan-Am games in 2015 which is a similar B level Olympics and besides the fact that Canada can win a zillion medals in these things - you barely remember it happening two days after its over.
Exploring a joint bid between Calgary, Edmonton, and the Tsuut'ina. Venues would likely be in both cities, plus on the reserve and elsewhere in the Bow Valley corridor (which likely means Canmore -- I'd guess mountain biking at the Nordic Centre).
They are currently doing a feasibility study and will make a final decision to bid in August, with the Games scheduled to be awarded in November. India is the only other country to express interest in hosting the 2030 games but have not announced a formal bid. If Alberta does decide to bid, there's a good chance it will be unopposed.
No details on the projected cost or venue choices were announced.

The new Canmore Nordic Centre will be ready to go for biking by then too, so that'll be good use of that facility!
For aquatics, I'm assuming those will either be either at the Kinsmen in Edmonton, or the revamped MNP Community & Sport Centre, which is undergoing a major renovation and expansion shortly.

Calgary's standard position should never be to joint bid for anything with Edmonton.
Talk about tarnishing a brand.
Edmonton has a proven record with the Commonwealth Games and Universiade. There are numerous reasons for a joint bid, such as supporting a funding request from the province and the feds and a better choice of facilities. Maybe this would lead to rail between the cities and elsewhere.

People barely care about the Olympics. Absolutely no one cares about the Commonwealth Games. This is a waste of money, as far as I'm concerned.
