Yes. Yes you can go wrong. Such a blanket statement is silly.

It actually makes more sense for Barrie, Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, and a bunch of picks/prospects for 1.5-2M in salary retention

Would Karlsson even waive to spend 5 years in Edmonton? Full no move

So SJ is going to accept a flaming bag of dog poo for him? Those picks better be multiple firsts.

Sure they will. They don't want him on the books for 4 more years at $11.5MM either. Even moreso if he stinks like he generally has outside if maybe his first year there.

I could see the Oilers giving up a ton in terms of futures to make this happen. The Sharks likely retain 1.5-2.5M per and the Oilers have decent enough contracts to salary match. Sharks would be wise to sell high.

Defensively it is not optimal for the oil, but their PP would be terrifying for opponents.

That means they'll dive, dive, and dive some more!

Barrie and Puljujarvi make a lot of sense as part of the return to fit Karlsson salary under the cap (along with a boatload of picks). Barrie would have no more use to Edmonton with Karlsson. And the Sharks could flip him at next year's trade deadline.

Exactly...he left Canada for California already, and it's not a one year deal...

I think it would have to be Nurse+ 1st at least.

It already is though.
Like it's the best in the league. Realistically, how much better can it be?
On the flip side, what kind of depth are they going to have to give up (in the trade, and to waivers/other moves) to make the cap work for the next 5+ years?

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Aren’t McDavid and Nurse really tight? If so, can’t see Nurse being traded: Oilers would not want McDavid to be upset

Trading away Broberg/Bouchard, a couple of 1sts, and another top prospect to get San Jose to deal Karlsson would surely be something. Best of luck icing a team where Nurse and Karlsson are a combined 18m (if there is retention) and McDavid/Draisaitl an additional 21m.

Lol, this would be such an Oiler move. The golden twins and the McPP aren't enough. We must have more offence!

If Nurse is going back the other way the Oilers should have to send at least 3x 1st rounders IMO.
