Man, the guy was a lunatic on the ice. It's interesting to hear how beloved and humble he was off the ice considering how vicious and disrespectful he was on the ice.

I would never condone the things he did on the ice, but he was certainly an inspiration for many.

RIP.

He was dirty, but usually dirty against other dirty players. I don't recall him being the kind of player to go after light weights or players that weren't throwing cheap shots first. I think that is why he was respected and had kind of a vigilante reputation as opposed to someone who just went out there the cheap shot innocent players.

Does that change what I said?

I recognize the era he played in. If you look, there are some serious incidents in which one could say he went over the line of "enforcer" - at least IMO.

Watch the Lindros incident if you don't believe me.

I certainly wouldn't be showing my kids those videos as a, "this is how you play hockey."

Either way, off the ice, from all accounts, he was gem.
