Zadarov is one of my recent favorites but I'd much rather move the asset then have to try to sign him for 5+ after next year if he keeps up his strong play. Much rather trade for assets and give Sutter more chances with other diamonds in the rough.

Sutter will only be here for a couple more years at most.

Devon Toews would be my number 1 target in that off-season assuming we are still going for it.

Just checked and you're right. Didn't check when making my post... I had assumed he had more points given his frequent rushes and that he has scored more goals.

Hanifin. He's become a hell of a player here in CGY. And he's younger than Raz. So uhhh yeah. By the time he gets to Weegars age, he'll be the better player.

Weegar for me. Been sour on Hanifin since late last season. He has lots of talent but seems to make loads of mistakes in high pressure games.

You keep both. Flames are not in a position now or going forward to be letting top 4 dmen leave.

If the question was "which defenseman would you choose for the rest of the year", I would choose Weegs- he's a better transitional player, tougher, more physical, and a whiz at breaking up entries. If Hanifin was gone, we would see the offensive side of Weegar's game, as he's not really being counted on for that right now. The last few years, he was considered by some to be one of the top D in the league.
If it's a question of which guy going forward, it becomes a little more difficult. Given the age difference, I think I would go for Hanifin. Hanifin still has more to give, and by the time he's in his prime, Weegs might be in decline.

Dont want to pay Hanifin 7-8 million, way too many brain farts and plays that kill offense.

I really don't see that happening, as Lindholm is a better D than Hanifin, particularly in the playoffs. He's more physical, better defensively (capable of playing a tight shutdown role), and makes far less mistakes. He's in the middle of an extremely good season with the B's- looked like a Norris candidate for a while there...

Weegar is locked in for 8 so if it is not both then the choice has already been made. Hanifin has turned into a really solid Dman and I prefer him but like both players and think Weegar is still adjusting so we haven’t seen the best from him.

Hanifin is younger and cheaper. Plays more minutes now and is a good fit with Anderson. I’m keeping him if I can afford it. I’m guessing eventually they’re not going to be able to afford everyone. Their bottom two or 3 are going to have to start getting cheaper at some point.

If he was as good offensively as he is defensively then we’d be talking about a couple mil more per year…

Hanifin is such a weird one. Half the times he's our #4, half the time I think he's our best defender.
Keep both if possible, Tanev can't have too much left in the tank. If Hanifin won't resign then ya trade him this summer.

Only 25, it seems like he has been around forever.
I forget his is still so young.

I kinda want to see a top4 be the following to see if it works better:
Weegar - Andersson
Hanafin - Tanev
Regarding the question, think hanafin’s age and experience (given his age) probably gives him the edge from a value perspective.

Hanifin has actually been awesome the last 5-6 games. If he can keep it up it'll be a much tougher decision than people are making it out to be. Those games in particular in St. Louis he was their best defenceman.

Hanifin is a maddening case. has those brilliant games in him where he's bar none the best guy on the ice and fans are left salivating
but an average Hanifin game usually includes brainfarts that directly result in GA and a minus on the night
just look at the Dallas game. there was a huge gap between Tanev-Weegar and Hanifin-Rasmus in +/- which really reflects the costs of enjoying the offense of Hani-Ras, which is even more goals against than they help us put up
some of that can be attributed to Andersson's tough nights in his own end, but I haven't seen Hanifin take steps toward cutting down the eggregious giveaways
he was arguably the worst d-man against Edmonton. we need him to be better defensively to be worth retaining long time at #1/2 D money
great tools are there but he hasn't yet tied it all together on a consistent basis
still a good d-man that I would have as a #3 on a contending team with a good defensive partner

Hanifin has been the Flames worst d-man possession-wise for large stretches this season and last. So I go with Weegar.
