I'm hopeful that we will see more R&D dollars available for fusion power as a result of this announcement.

Over the years I've seen countless examples of articles/Youtube videos/social media posts claiming some tremendous breakthrough or something amazing happening that will surely change the world for the better.... only to later find out it was mostly hype and heavily misrepresented the facts of what happened.

This wasn't one of those cases. It was the real thing this time. Ok. I get it. Sorry. Geez.

Hopefully you can understand why I come at these kinds of things with a great deal of initial skepticism. Especially when I google searched about it when I first saw it and, at the time, the story had not been picked up by any major news outlet.

There was no intent of condesension or anything like that.

None taken, and your skepticism was well warranted.

I remember the first time I heard about a breakthrough with cold fusion - it was about 1980 and it was so exciting. Then it turned out to be a hoax, or a misrepresentation, or it couldn't be replicated, or whatever.

I remember thinking, that's okay, we're on the path now.

Well, here we are 40 years later, and the 'news' is pretty much exactly as it was then. Call me when there is REAL news.

We do have flying cars, they're called helicopters.

Well there's these:

But the one problem with helicopters and 'personal electric aerial vehicles' is that they don't sound how a flying car is supposed to:

I actually think if you ever see anything at resembles a flying car, it will look more like the quadcopter drones you are seeing now, just much much easier to steer / keep stable than a tradition up/down + counter spin system that you see. I'm sure passenger size ones do exist, but I don't think they are commercially available in the way that helicopters are, and it's not something I've seen.

I also think in most peoples view of flying cars, they are imagining something with standardized lanes/routes where you do not need any kind of traffic clearance to hop in a go, which I don't know for sure, but do not believe is currently the case for helicopters? their location does need to be communicated to a traffic controller at present?

edit: didn't even watch the video above. quadcopter.
