It was reported players in locker room didn’t like the comment. I found it funny but I could see why players wouldn’t. Imagine having to field questions about taking a s**t from the media.

That said, playing those teams is also a very good litmus test of where you are as a franchise. Are you a top tier team? The season started pointing in that direction and has since taken a sharp downward turn. Treading water until you face teams closer to where you're at seems possible but you still have to win those games. And again, this team is trending downward. Those aren't guaranteed in the least.
We won't be playing Arizona and Chicago if we make the playoffs. If we beat up on the bottom feeders and get beat up by the top tier teams what does that make us? Probably a bottom feeder as well. The good teams will look at the schedule and looks at Calgary and talk about the easy part of the schedule.

No but you hope the team gels and develops chemistry/positive play habits in games like those. Instead they have been challenged right out of the gate and while that started well, its gone south pretty quick for a number of reasons.

Stupid and unprofessional. Hardly a way to welcome your new franchise player.
New franchise player has issues with pressure. Pretty easy to see that.

Statements like this prove the power of what one stupid comment from Sutter can lead to. He undermined his new star that night, and now people are going so far as to say saying Huberdeau can’t handle pressure…? Maybe the coach is the one who can’t handle the pressure. He’s getting paid very good money to talk to the media every day. If he can’t handle the questions professionally, yeah - send someone else out.

Yet posters fail to see this and continue to defend the comment. Just disrespectful to the new player who clearly had something bothering him injury wise.

FWIW, here’s a Twitter account that found a French language interview with Huberdeau on the subject. Sounds to me like he’s figured out Sutter and isn’t going to let it bother him:

https://twitter.com/fierybreadman/st...e4mMVYH4w1ELcA

The headline, roughly translated, says, “Knowing how to deal with Darryl Sutter.”

Given Treliving's track record of hiring coaches, I don't think they can find a better guy if they let go of Sutter.

Sutter runs good systems and can motivate players, but they need to basically take his horrible player usage this season out of his hands by waiving the dead weight he insists on giving the most minutes to every night.

I just really have no idea how that comment could possibly ever be seen as anything other than a guy known for saying something funny to the media, saying something funny to the media. Am I just missing something? I truly don't see how it's disrespectful or undermining.

Just can't see Sutter being removed but if that were to happen Muller would just take over. Not a great track record as a head coach but my guess is he'd take over and MacLean would come down and take a spot on the bench too.

That said, forcing Darryl's hand to play the vets less and youth more would likely end up in a power struggle. Could make things worse. No idea what to do there.

Would like to think that with last nights loss, the lines go back to slotting players where they should be. Get the 4th liners on the fourth line and set the top 6. Sutter said himself that Huberdeau was the best passer the team has ever seen, so play him with Lewis... who has 23 goals combined in his last 5 seasons.

Huberdeau was hurt and testing out his injury to see if he could play. Rather than comment on how he played through some pain and needed to get treatment for it, Sutter suggested the poor play and subsequent time away from that game was because he had to poop.

So put yourself in that spot. You're hurt, doing what you can to get back to help your team, and your coach says you had to take a crap. Now you have to answer questions about it at best and at worst you see yourself in headlines and stories as the butt (no pun intended) of a joke.

Welcome to Calgary I guess? Bad way to start.

lol Dino said the same thing and I maintain that if Sutter had just said that and fired off a sly grin it would have gone over so much better with everyone. Words and tone matter.

I maintain that some people would’ve been upset anyway, because people get upset about everything with this team.

Probably. But the important thing is that Huberdeau probably wouldn't have been.

I still really just don't see it though, maybe we're wired differently but I would never take that comment in any negative kind of way, it wouldn't cross my mind so I was a little surprised to see people bringing it up like that.

But still, thanks for explaining and not just answering with snark like a lot of posters would

Not convinced its exclusive to this team, as a society we seem to be pretty focused on finding opportunities to be outraged these days.

Sutter has been strange this year. Started with camp and has rolled into the season.

For a coach who is consistent with his lines throwing everything into the blender this early and as frequently he has is unlike Sutter. Top it off with sprinkling a plugger throughout the lineup has not helped with anything.

Continuing to go back to Markstrom when he clearly has lost his net.

It's not a systems issue, although they can be a lot more aggressive with that second wave. It's more of a bench management and lineup issue at this point. Giving icetime to undeserving pluggers, keeping your top offensive players sitting, putting pluggers on every line, rolling 4 lines regardless of the score and not giving enough time for players to find chemistry.

Seems like Sutter lost his identity as a coach to start the year.

Not really. The guy that has no pressure on him in Florida is thriving. Its not meant to be finger pointing but its the truth. You can smile and wave and hide it, but it's there.
