I think a rebuild would have been slow and painful. Not many teams had cap space this off season. Maybe Markstrom to new jersey could have got us a decent draft position with the flames 1st.

Not something I want to discuss but doesn't mean that you shouldn't. You should just have a more meaningful title. They way it's worded now makes you sound like an asshat that wants to tear the current situation apart.

MODS could you rename the thread title?
"What would the rebuild have looked like if we didn't go in the direction we did this summer?"
This is just a discussion and not a suggestion that I wanted a rebuild. Some people are taking it that way and are overly sensitive. Thanks!

I can't believe this is a thread after two losses in a row. It's a long season, there will be peaks and valleys.
|
This isn't about the two losses. It's only a discussion and it was triggered by me looking at our cap situation for next year as stated in the OP.

I don’t want a rebuild. I just thought that the last generation was going to be our way to a cup. This feels like a retooling that isn’t really as elite as the last. Maybe on paper, but it reminds me of the 2008-2010 flames. A hold over till the next generation comes in. Because this team sure as hell isn’t young.

A missed opportunity not tanking this year with how great the top 4-5 look. They would all go first overall any other year. I guess anything can still happen but the current squad looks subpar

But you assumed the rebuild after the Huberdeau and Weegar trade.
That trade doesn't happen if the Flames intended to rebuild.

Go back to HFOil. Why do you even try when you are an admitted Oilers troll?

Meh, just add that troll to your block list and live on man. Why even bother to engage? That's what they want, so don't give it to em.

Something like 2012-2015. But the thing is you have to be forced into it by a bad GM, bad coach and bad decisions. Ownership didn't want to rebuild, Feaster didn't want to rebuild, Hartley didn't want to lose, but through incompetence and lack of talent it happened anyway.

I will say it's a helluva year to have a high pick. I truly believe this draft is one of the best to come along in some time. I see 2 potential franchiser players, and then 2 more top of the line-up all star potential players. And then a good crop of guys with top 6 potential. Strong on forwards, weak on D.
But anyone in the top 12ish is getting a foundational piece. And those at the top end are getting some elite level talent.
Not saying the Flames should have re-built but its one of those years that can change a team's fortunes.

Just watch the Flames miss the playoffs and somehow slide into the top 3 at the draft.
Best of both worlds imo.

I kind of thought they should've rebuilt when Johnny bolted and Tkachuk made his intentions clear. They used all their assets and leverage to bring in comparable players, albeit much older ones, also on expensive long-term deals.
It's worth it if you win a Stanley Cup, sure, but this squad wasn't that close last year and with almost every core player 29 and older that window is gonna close fast.
