Honestly, with how fast the game is today, and how closely the game is called in terms of slashing and obstruction, it must be like night and day from a referee's perspective. Back then, the ref's job was basically to make sure the teams didn't kill each other.
Back then the refs job was to let them play hockey. Now the refs job is to micromanage games, try to be perfect in dropping a puck and will make it about them, make calls based on game scores and who is the home team, waive off icing randomly for no particular reason, and show zero consistency in making calls.

Surely, though, someone in the room had to have at least asked, "are we sure this 37-year old former player who was assistant GM for one season before going back to coaching is ready for this role?"
I'm sure the question was asked. And I'm sure the answer was, ‘No, but we honestly have no idea who would be ready for it. Better to go with the devil we know.’

Me too! I actually have the trio of videos from ‘89, ‘90, and ‘91. I watched the ‘89 one about a thousand times as a kid, and it had some great cheesy music (“Paint the Town Red” and that sappy “Don’t ya know, I did the best I could…” ballad at the end.) I love the theme song for the “Into The 90’s” vid, complete with ultra cool graphics. I wonder if there were any other Flames video yearbooks- I’d love to snag them.
For related content, here’s a thread I started on the ‘91 Battle of Alberta. I can’t believe I made it in 2008, I swear it’s from 2-3 years ago. Time flies!
man, if we won that game 7 i think we would have won another cup that year.
My first ever memory of the Flames is game 6 SCF '89, but admittedly I was too young to fully appreciate it and was just enjoying watching my dad and uncle celebrate, I consider that '91 series vs Edmonton to be the very beginning of true Flames fandom. It also kicked off an excruciating stretch of watching them lose in game 7 OT in the first round THREE times in 5 years (91, 94, 95) with 0 series wins during that time. It was a fitting beginning to my Flames fandom.

I've never seen 87 or 88, but I have an old bootleg copy of the 1986 video. Someone uploaded it to youtube -- it's a good one:

I was at game 7 and remember quite well how loud the Dome was when the Flames went up 3-0. Then comes Tikkanen who skates over centre ice and fires one between Vernon's legs and the Dome goes silent. Another bad goal let in by Vernon at the wrong time and the rest is history
wow awesome you got to see an awesome game, i was only about 14 at the time.
I would never want to go back to that defensive style. Good god defenders just hugged people until the puck left the zone.
I understand the nostalgia you guys have for that era and the added emotion and enthusiasm that the team and fans had. But I don't think that has anything to do with era's or anything like that. You were an up and coming team. You had the rival with a dynasty. The team was still relatively new to the city. There are several things that made Calgary exciting at that time.
scoring was higher and it was more open, i would say it's more defensive now. Their were a lot of barnburners. I haven't looked at stats, though, just using memory i could be wrong lol
I remember the '89 cup win, i was 12 and I kept asking my mom if we really won, and mom took us for a drive honking the horn in celebration. I remember being so bored because the friends in the neighborhood were all watching. I was outside playing through most of the game except the last 10mins, i saw Lanny score the big winning goal. After that I started getting into hockey and most importantly, the Flames.

Technically, based on hockey's definition of GWG, yes. However, we all know it was Lanny's goal that is the real winner. That gave the Flames the lead that never disappeared and the lift that lead them to believe that they were winning the big silver shiny trophy that night.
