Can’t see anybody picking up Val at $1.55 million cap hit. Nothing about his camp made him look like even a 7th dman.

I'd be shocked if Arizona didn't claim him. 1st round pedigree in a position of need?

They have a ton of similar defencemen. Huge logjam at that position.

He'd be as good or better than half the defensemen on the Habs and Hawks. The Sens, Sharks, Wings, and Sabres have holes on their bottom pairing and enough cap space to be interested. The Nucks would probably be interested if they had cap space.
CP is pretty down on Valimaki and the Flames have a lot of depth right now, but there are a good amount of teams that need help on D at the moment.

Those teams need to start giving draft picks back to us.
Part of the player development pathway is to at least recoup something.
How do you trade a player that could be on waivers? Convince teams that are farther down the claim list that some team ahead of them will get in first.

Montreal could use LHD that are roster ready. If Valimaki is waived and clears maybe there is a trade to be made there with 2 teams very familiar with one another on the trade front

I put the odds at Valimaki passing through waivers at 95%. If his contract could be buried completely in the minors, then maybe 90%. The only reason it isn't 100% is because there just may be a GM (or a scout whispering into a GM's ear) that really liked Valimaki in his draft and draft +1 year to want to take a chance. I hope someone does. Valimaki hasn't progressed, and I would rather the Flames recoup that cap space.
Valimaki is an RFA after this season. I can't see the Flames qualifying him unless he takes a step forward this season - a significant step forward at that.

I guess Meloche is making the team. Has Zohorna done enough to make the opening night roster, or does he hit the waiver wire again?

Training camp is never really over until there's a Michael Stone signing. It's an annual tradition.

Meloche is a bit of a bruiser. Has he been paired with Zadorov?

I wonder if Tre has had a potential trade or two in the works for a RW but when Zohorna came up they decided to give him a look instead. Since that didn't work out, circle back to the trade?

If they thought Zahorna was the better option I am not looking forward to who'd be coming back in that trade lol

Terrible timing for Valamaki and his injury.
Because then COVID hits and the bubble and another shortened season and no proper AHL league to play in, and this his development severely stunted.
Development wise it is like being on the Oilers for these seasons but not actually playing games.
If you had a crystal ball knowing this was going to happen, do you trade him for a rented, with the chance to sign, Mark Stone, as the Flames were in the running for but not wanting to give up Valimaki?

Yes, because the GM has been juat awful at acquiring players. Zohorna was a worthwhile free gamble that didn't work out.

Not a slight against the GM, just that if they put a trade on hold because Zahorna might have been the better option, I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope for what might be coming back.
So more a slight against a player that may not even exist in a trade that may never have been explored in the first place.
Everyone chill.
