The fact he was a Calgarian and in the Dub is totally irrelevant to me.
I know for a fact Todd Button pushed to take him on the draft floor and was overruled, I can forgive for not taking him at 34 but 54 and 64 was an epic mistake.

Yes up to a point.

1. Teams still have to be cap compliant.
2. Teams cannot exceed 50 NHL contracts.
3. Teams cannot have more than 23 players on the active roster from the start of the season until the day of the trade deadline.

I just wanted to add that claiming someone off waivers(in contrast to unconditional waivers) also includes paying the waiving team a fee. However, I’m not sure if that amount is at all significant.

I will say, Smith was a far bigger bust than Wotherspoon. Tyler Wotherspoon is still getting NHL contracts more than a decade after the draft. He has been very effective in the AHL.

Smith wasn't good enough for the AHL and hasn't played in years, despite being a few years younger than Wotherspoon.

Under the 2013 CBA, the fee ranged from about $3,000 for a veteran who's been under NHL contract for more than 9 years, up to $90,000 for a goalie with less than two years under contract. I haven't got the current MOU handy, so I don't know if those numbers have been adjusted.

Basically, it's chump change compared to the salary of any player being claimed.
